Default EDGE connection for Cingular 2125 and tethering

Hi, I am a new poster.

I got the 2125 (upgraded from SMT5600). I have a Dell Axim X50v, Powerbook 12" and a Dell Inspiron 6000.
I can't get EDGE w/ tethering. I've search the archives and google to no end.

I can tether just fine
using

dial: *99#
User name: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1

however, I am not getting EDGE.
I can't go to http://device.home or http://home

I can surf the web but it is REALLY, REALLY SLOW
I tested it and it is around 25-34K

The phone itself, when I surf on it can go 112K.
I can log into somafm.com and pull a radio stream and it plays in media-player without stuterring. I can also stream video and web pages fly really fast on the phone.

In the data connection bars, there is always a "E"

BUT whenever, I tether, it is GPRS. No "E" above the data connection

I do have a BIG "E" in the middle of the screen. It is always there when I make voice calls. But no "little E" over the data connection icon

So what do I need to do?

I tried the extra strings;

+GCDCONTS=1, "IP", "wap.cingular"
I also tried dialing

wap.cingular
*99***3#
and
*9***1#

Still no luck w/ EDGE & tethering

Is there a registry setting to force DUN to use EDGE?

Thanks in advance

your phone has to train itself to use EDGE. i didnt get the EDGE indicator on my phone for about 2-3 days after i first activated the device. also you have to take into consideration that you might not be next to EDGE enabled tower for your phone to connect to. If you are not next to one it will drop down to a GPRS connection.

Default phone does get edge. just no edge w/ pda or laptop

I think you're confused with my post.

I get edge. Only when I use the phone by itself.

phone = edge
phone w/ pda or laptop = gprs

I un-thether the laptop and I get edge.
2 seconds later, I have a laptop, I get grps
back to the phone by itself, i get edge.

there must be a modem string to get edge.

Default worked fine for me

just a few days after getting the phone my cable connection went down for a few hours, and I was able to tether my desktop to use the 2125 and was getting decent speed. Can't remember exactly what I did, but I simply followed the instructions on page 64 in user manual...

Hmm, I know on the old phones that the dial string you are using is the GPRS dial string. So I searched to see if there was a different one for Edge tethering.

Did you set your connection speed in the DUN to 230K vs the default 38400?

Also, a couple boards say that the EDGE dial string is *998**3# - some got higher speeds some got "application unknown" - perhaps it is phone related?

Try the *998**3# dial string and send us a message back!

Default *998**3# = Application Unknown.

*998**3# = Application Unknown. I already tried that.

I seriously doubt anyone has EDGE and tethering.

try going to http://somafm.com, click on any radio strean in Windows Media.

The phone *itself* will stream & play the files. Tethering won't get you anywhere.

I finally got my 2125 tethered.
The E on my top bar doesn't go away either.

I tried the internet radio station above and selected a WMA link. I plays fine without stuttering.

Were you able to get it to work?

PS: I linked that site. :rock on dude!:

for instructions, try this link:

http://forums.cingular.com/cng/board...essage.id=1578

You may need to hunt around on the cingular boards to get more info.

On the issue of why you cannot see the media net home page. The 2125 uses a proxy server: wireless.cingular.com. It is really useless to use the proxy for your laptop.
