Well, if you want some SERIOUS thoughts...
It is interesting to realize that we're moving into a whole new development phase of the social networking "tsunami" forming on the Internet. I know, Corporate America has been "aware" of bloggers, increasingly, as has Political America... But what we're starting to see is an honest appraisal of just how many eyeballs the bloggers and forums are able to boast -- and commercial expansion into the Public Relations aspect of sponsoring flashy promotions, which incidentally get a lot of decent publicity out there into the very category of active consumers that most companies only DREAM of being able to target so tightly!!
SO -- it is going to be VERY interesting to see just how THIS particular promotion plays out... If you think about it, this is still somewhat of a trial run, to see just how to get the most "bang for their buck" -- which means that each of the 50 different blogs "gifted" with this set of prizes, each with their slightly different approach to generating an enthusiastic response, is providing a research test-bed to help figure out "do's and don'ts".
Some of the blogs are using this opportunity to improve THEIR network standing, by requiring multiple layers of external linkages back, and DIGG and Twitter and Facebook and etc etc links. As far as I've seen the only externally imposed constraint appears to involve "sharing the wealth", finding some socially conscious aspect as improving the odds for any given contestant.
Have to give good odds we're going to see a few more promotions like this, at least until consensus is reached about whether this is more cost effective (cost versus eyeballs) than Superbowl commercials, eh?
