"Philip Greenspun, a well known writer and MIT instructor on the development of community web sites, founded photo.net in the early 90's as a showcase for his own travel writing and photography. It has since developed into the largest photography community on the web, with (according to Alexa) the highest traffic of any general photography web site, with over 100,000 unique visitors per day. Philip still helps guide the site as a member of its Board of Directors, although he is no longer involved in day-to-day operations.
The most prominent sections of the site are forums and galleries with member-contributed photos and writing. Volunteer moderators and editors are responsible for most of this content. The site also hosts active sections for classified ads, and a "Neighbor" section with member ratings and feedback on photography retailers and processing labs. The "ezShop" section features member-contributed equipment reviews and comparative shopping, with offers from photography retailers who sponsor photo.net. There are over 3300 edited articles and reviews on photography equipment, technique, and travel in the "Equipment", "Learn", and "Travel" sections, with new articles being added steadily."
