Canon EOS 5D Hands-on Preview

The EOS 5D is aimed to slot in between the EOS 20D and the EOS-1D professional digital SLR's, an important difference when compared to the later is that the EOS 5D doesn't have any environmental seals. While Canon don't specifically refer to the EOS 5D as a 'professional' digital SLR it will have obvious appeal to professionals who want a high quality digital SLR in a body lighter than the EOS-1D."



A typically good hands-on preview of the newly announced Canon EOS 5D. Read on to find out more. I really wish I have about $4K lying around to waste (invest) in this. One unfortunate point is that apparently the lenses that work with the EOS 10D/20D and the 350XT etc don't work with the 5D. Bad idea IMHO.

That is not quite right. The 5D does not work with the EF-S lenses that were first developed for the Digital Rebel (or EOS 300), but it does work with all EF lenses. As a Digital Rebel user, I have both kinds of lenses, so if I were in the market for the 5D- which I will not be anytime soon- my lens investment would still have value.

I also disagree with this statement. I don't have any Cannon equipment but I do have a Minolta 7D which has the 2/3 frame sensor like the Cannon Reb, 10 & 20. Minolta, Cannon, Tamron etc have started to make 2/3 sensor lenses for these camera. These lenses won't work on the new Cannon 5 or any film camera. We all new that when we bought them and I don't think a Cannon 5 owner will ever complain that they have to many 2/3 frame lenses.

The full-frame sensor is REALLY appealing - I wonder how long it will take for this to trickle down into the lower end Canon DSLR cameras?

When this was just a rumour it was said that it would be one of two fullframe models. Hopefully the other one will be lower price point.

If I were to spend $3300 on a camera I would rather fulfill an old dream and get a Hasselblad.
