Default CableCARD, Tech Firms Want it, Cable Companies Don't

http://thomashawk.com/2005/03/cablecard-tech-firms-want-it-cable.html

"Cable operators have been dragging their heels and are being forced into the PVR revolution as reluctant participants. They have enjoyed the benefits of a captive audience for too long and quite frankly don't want you having more freedom with your television -- it is not in their economic interest. However, The FCC is here not to protect cable company profits but to represent American consumers and communication advancement. Not only should the FCC insist on the July 1, 2006 mandate that new cable set-top boxes include CableCARD technology, but they should strengthen their language and position to require the adoption of bi-directional CableCARDs by July 1, 2006 in order to enhance what can be done with recording HDTV and other video on demand type technology and services."

I can only hope one day we'll actually see CableCARDs in every home theater component. Too many cable companies have horrible DVRs and cable boxes that make people want to throw them out the door. I should be able to plug my TiVo, MCE or PS2 into the cable outlet and view digital cable or HDTV. Why is this so hard?

The only thing my cable company wants is money and lots of it. They want $80.00US per month for "basic" digital service for 1 and only 1 set. If I want HDTV, DVR or movies it is all on top of that "basic" rate. As far as I'm concerned, I'll do without TV before paying their blood money.
