Net effect: three years from now, CE manufacturers won't support HDMI any longer (it doesn't support anything higher than 1080p). Just as DVI is being phased out now (because it doesn't carry audio, and most implementations don't support HDMI). Or how component video was supposed to be the way to do HD (but is being killed off because of its lack of copy protection). Makes me kind of mad that the viable lives of these technologies is so short.
Please, guys, just come up with a future-proof standard and stick with it. (DVI and HDMI are too short sighted!) I don't feel like replacing my home entertainment system every couple of years just because it doesn't support the current trend in connectors.
