Default Sony To Stop Producing PDP TVs

http://www.digitimes.com/displays/a20060803A6030.html

"Katsumi Ihara, executive deputy president of Sony's procurement strategies and TV & video business, recently stated that the company will stop producing PDP (plasma display panel) TVs, but Sony expects to increase the shipment ratio of its 40-inch and above LCD TVs to more than 50% by the end of 2006, according to a report from the Chinese-language website Sina.com. Ihara talked about Sony's TV strategy in Beijing on August 2, the report noted."

I think this is a two part decision. One, Sony feels the future is LCD so are switching over to 100% LCD now. Second, and probably the bigger reason, Sony does not have PDP production facilities, so their costs are higher and by moving to LCD (which they produce), they stay with a more profitable segment.

I feel the reason is option 2 on your list - they only make LCD panels.

From what I've read both Plasma and LCD are likely to be knocked into next week by SED technology which is likely to be coming out in a year or so, so I feel this is a short term commercial decision.

SEDs have been due to take over the display business "next year" for 20 years now.
Don't hold your breath...
Not only do they have to figure out how to build the things in quantity, they have to build them cheap enough to compete with PDPs and LCDs.

Not. Soon.
