Default Gateway QX2800 Seems Vaguely Familiar

http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/23/...x2800/#comments

"Looks like the kids in Taiwan will be able to take everyone's favorite Ion-based nettop for a spin sometime soon. Except, instead of being known as the Acer AspireRevo, its been rebranded as a Gateway QX2800. Actually, that isn't the only difference -- the CPU on this new guy has been upgraded to an Atom 330 dual core, and storage is now 500GB."

Getting close, but it still seems like these need the horsepower to handle HD video streaming to be a success.  When they get there, these will be the HTPC for the masses.

Don't these come on the nVidia Ion platform, thus making HD video playback possible?

Indeed - Ion is the 9400M GPU I believe, and with a dual-core Atom, it should be able to handle pretty much anything except for decent video encoding...

I think the only issue is that Flash video doesn't use hardware acceleration. Thus, the playback of HD on sites like YouTube or Hulu is dependent entirely on the CPU...one core of the CPU. Early reports of ION based systems seem to point to poor HD playback for Flash-based video.

Either Adobe needs to get off of their butts or everyone else needs to switch to Silverlight (which already supports hardware acceleration as well as adaptive bandwidth streaming and a generally much improved video experience--the minority, horrendously biased, anti-MS NetFlix users notwithstanding).

Ironic - I just saw an Acer advert for AspireRevo this weekend. Looks like its available right now in my locale. Time to drop by my local and take a peek.

And another thing... while the design looks decent, can we kill the ghastly green and pink audio jacks already? They look absolutely awful on machines that are meant to have some design flair.
