I've used the 28-70/2.6-2.8 a few times before, and bought and sold a 100-300/4. The latest Tokina I own is that 12-24/4, and so far it's not too bad for its price. The focus ring mechanism which debuted on the 28-80 is a joy to use. Certainly the Nikkor is better, but it's not better by twice; more like 10-20%.
BTW, Ken's tests are a bit suspicious to me. The 17-35 is a legendary lens in its own right, yet it performs worse then the cheaper lenses...
