Default D-Link DSM-120

"We like the D-Link DSM-120 for its innovative feature set, including connectivity to USB drives and MP3 players, and for it expandability through the addition of an optional internal hard drive. We'd like to see firmware updates smooth out some of its rough edges, such as navigation quirks, wireless stability, and compatibility issues with USB devices, but if you can find the DSM-120 for less than $150, it's not a bad deal."

I don't see why they don't offer this with the hard drive included. While most of us here can probably handle it, having to hook a drive (especially a 2.5 inch drive) to a PC to format and then install it in this device might just be a little more than Joe Consumer can do.

Too bad about that price...

At a third that list price (I'm sure some Chinese manufacturer will jump on this idea) it would make sense to have a couple of these (preferably with integrated spreakers) around the house (kitchen, garage, etc) as a wi-fi radio replacement.
Or, if they want to go gor $100-120, it ought to have a radio tuner, preferably with support for the new digital AM stations.

Not sure it really needs local file connectivity for that mission, though; the idea is that this would be an audio receiver/peripheral not a standalone system.
Not that the market won't have a use for a digital boombox:
I can just see it; using 5.25" 20GB HDs and lead-acid rechargeable batteries, the "'burb blaster"!!

Hey: its friday, okay?
And Oblivion is out and really cool...
Just waitin' for quittin' time...
