Sometimes, when deciding between a few cameras, one can get into analysis paralysis; you think and compare and think and compare, you increase your stress levels, and you still haven't bought the damn camera. I personally got out of that trap some time back.
My advice is pretty standard; go to the shops, take both cameras for a spin in the shop, and see what you like. Since you guys have a far better return practices, I think it shouldn't be a problem.
As for the two cameras, my only comment is that the S4 lens might have some QC inconsistencies. You might want to check that out. If not, the quality difference isn't that great unless you are very anal. And since you say you can't tell the difference, I think then, the difference doesn't matter!
Oh, and if you want to save some moola, check out the original Optio S. Sometimes the premium on 4 mp cameras over 3 just isn't worth it.
