Default Apple and Nike Announce Nike+iPod System

http://www.apple.com/ipod/nike/run.html

"With a sensor in your shoe and a receiver on your iPod nano, your run takes on a whole new dimension. See the minutes tick by. Watch the miles unfold. Hear real-time feedback. All to your favorite music — including the one song that always gets you through the home stretch."

This is the sort of innovation that keeps Apple in the lead. Now your shoes can tell your iPod how fast you're running, allowing it to tell your how well you're doing through the headphones, while your favorite music is playing. Feel like giving up at the start of the last mile? Press a button, and that one song that gets you over the hump ques up instantly. Then when you get home, dock your iPod, and download a complete second by second summary of your run to your desktop computer, allowing you to track your progress towards your fitness goals. This is something I hadn't expected from Apple or Nike, but constant innovation like this is what sets them apart from the rest. The best part? It's just $29. I predict they sell like hotcakes.

Now all they need is heart monitor displays, instead of the lame watch based units. -- oh and the ability to upload your workout to the PC for comparisons

I'd bet that isn't far off. As it is, i think the ability to download your speed/distance data when you get home is pretty slick. The ability to track and store heart rate data would be a great addition.

I'm interested in what the accuracy is like. Not to mention if it is compatible with other shoes (Nike wants you to use theirs with a built in slot for the foot pod).

I'm a big fan of what Garmin has done with their Forerunner 305, and 3rd party software has made it the perfect running tool. But the price tag is a little high for casual runners. This products $29 price will make it easy to try.
