Default Windows Vista SP1 Hits Windows Update Today

http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/w...ows-update.aspx

"Today, you can now download Windows Vista SP1 via Windows Update. For those of you eager to receive the benefits of Windows Vista SP1 - you can now do so! We've seen quite a bit of questions in our comments so we want to communicate as much as possible surrounding Windows Vista SP1 and today's release to Windows Update as we can. For those of you happy to wait - sit tight because SP1 will start downloading to PCs automatically beginning in mid-April (Remember, this happens only if you have your Windows Update configured to automatically download updates and SP1 will automatically download but not automatically install). But if you want to get the benefit of a year's worth of improvements right now, go check Windows Update today...(Hit the Start Menu, All Programs, and select Windows Update). If in running Windows Update you do not see Windows Vista SP1 listed, there are a number of good reasons for this (Eight in fact, see the whole list)."

It's here - it's finally here! For many people, the release of a service pack is when they start seriously considering a Microsoft operating system. Myself, I've been running Vista on every system I own (save one small laptop) since January 2007, and for the most part Vista works great. I copy files back and forth a lot and Vista's copying performance was truly suck-tastic, but it's now much improved with SP1. Ars Technica has a great article on all the things that have been changed, so give that a read if you're curious. I've been slowly putting SP1 on all my computers over the past couple of weeks (I got SP1 from MSDN), and with one exception, it's gone on smoothly. The one exception? My Dell XPS M1330. The error message it gave me was quite unhelpful, so I'm going to try again in a couple of weeks and see if Windows Update has any goodness for me. Any other XPS M1330 users out there having trouble getting SP1 installed?

I'm going to hold off on installing the service pack for at least one week.

I want to see if there are any reports of installation scenarios that Microsoft didn't take under account.

Like Jason, I'd love to put it on my three Vista systems as soon as possible. I've been waiting for the official release, and was excited to see this post announcing it was released.

I'm not an MSDN subscriber though, so its only Windows Update for me. I've checked on two of my three Vista systems though, and I can't see it. I don't seem to fall into any of the eight categories except for possibly the driver one.

Oh well...I guess I'll wait longer. Thanks for letting us know though!

Well, that's great. Had I known it'd be this soon I'd have stuck with Vista a bit more on my notebook to see how SP1 would've affected it. In its current form it had me scurrying back to XP ASAP.

Default Hold off woes

Stupidly I went ahead from there windows update page and now it won't boot. I get a corrupt notskrnl.exe file at boot up. Using the Vista original disk I can repair it but next time I boot same problem. ( Loads of people are having this problem or the endless rebooting problem.) It keeps trying to install 3 parts to the SP1 pack but fails and hence, I guess, the corrupt boot. I tried doing a system restore but it says it can't cause there are corrupt files. 2 years ago after all my life as a pc man I bought a 24" iMac. Despite having a complete operating system update from tiger to leopard it hasn't failed once in the 2 years for any reason what so ever. Not ONCE. It does everything I could do on my pc except top end games. So I use my xbox360 for that or the Vista pc. Though not at the moment till Microsoft sorts this latest debacle out. You would do well to hold off, as I will in the future, for awhile.

Started yesterday at 2pm and finished at 6pm. This on a less than one year old Dell E521 with Vista Ultimate. Not a whole lot installed - Office 2007, Flash, Adobe Reader, etc. Also has Encarta and Microsoft's Zoo Tycoon, but not much else. Upgrade failed 3 times before I finally went in and disabled every startup app and disabled non-essential services, including Windows OneCare.

I have 2 other Vista PCs in my posession and I am not wasting my time trying to get SP1 on them. I'll just wait until I get the urge to reformat the hard drives for some other reason.

Guess I was lucky. I installed on a Dell 530 running Ultimate. Took a couple of hours. and no problems.

I downloaded a Vista Business with SP1 DVD from MSDN a couple of weeks ago and did a fresh install on my Lenovo T61. The system is now running faster than ever, SP1 really delivers what it promises :-)
