Default Star Trek Going HD DVD

http://www.hdbeat.com/2006/07/26/paramout-releasing-the-ultimate-star-trek-movie-collection-on/

"Captain Kirk is about to met high definition. Paramount is currently working on remastering all of the original movies found in the Ultimate Star Trek Movie Collection into HD DVD. There is also a slight chance that they are going to do Blu-ray too. It just keeps getting better though. MovieWeb is reporting that the studio is also remastering all 79 original episodes into high-def as well. Are we going to stop there with the Star Trek news? Oh no. We've got more for you as it seems that they have ideas to release all four seasons of Star Trek: Enterprise on a high-def format too. We don't have any release deets for you yet, but you can expect to see it as soon as we do."

Score one for the HD DVD camp. Now if they can pick up the Lord of the Rings and Star Wars movie, the format wars will be a done deal in my book. Of course, it figures that within a week of my finally acquiring ALL the Star Trek DVD's that the announcement would come that they will soon be obsolete.

I'd be more excited if I didn't know they intend to charge $119 per season of each of the shows.
And at those prices, only DS9 comes even vaguely close to delivering value...

I hear you, while I love owning the entire set, they are far from cheap. It would be nice if they had an upgrade special or something.

Do you really think it'll be worth seeing the original series n HD?

When I watch the episodes I have purchased on DVD, I feel the picture is sometimes grainy. How much worse wil that show up in HD format.

I could understand rescaling ST-TNG, DS-9, Voyager, & Enterprise since they were shot with newer filming equipment. Same goes for the original movies.

I love Star Trek as much as the next guy but I don't think I'm going to invest in HD-DVD or Blueray just to watch the shows I already own on DVD.

Depends on the quality of the original film stock and the quality of the digital transfer. Good quality film has higher-than-HD resolution so it doesn't *have* to look any worse than a contemporary movie.
One example is Hogan's Heroes which looks great in HD; HDNET paid for a first-rate digital transfer and it looks as good as any of their year-old network hand-me-downs.
Plus it is funnier. ;-)

I'd really have to see it in person and witness the improvement to justify dishing out any more money...I've spent a fortune on my ST DVDs, I only lack Enterprise and am not purchasing it out of protest for how stupidly expensive it is. That, and the fact that I want to forget the episodes I saw recently so I can enjoy them again (yes, I did like the series and mourn its passing).

For me, I'd care more about them re-mastering it to 16:9 rather than bumping the resolution. HD-DVD resoution AND true widescreen support? THAT would be worth buying. I hate watching DVDs in square screen mode. :-(

Remastered original series in HD? I'm so there.
It just might make my buy an HD-DVD player.
