Default Plextor Releases 18X Dual Format DVD Burner

http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=763

"Plextor's newest can do 18X on single layer DVDR media, 10X on DVD+R DL. If four minute DVD-R burn times were not fast enough for you, Plextor just announced the E-IDE PX-760A DVD recorder. The drive is capable of burning 18X speeds on 16X certified DVD-R and DVD+R media. Furthermore, the drive obtains 10X speeds on supported DVD+R dual layer media, and 6x record speeds on DVD-R dual layer media. The drive is capable of burning DVD-RW, DVD-VR and CD-R/W media as well. SATA versions of the PX-760 are due out later this year, but Plextor is releasing an external USB version called the PX-760UF, at the same time as the E-IDE drive. The drive features a 2MB buffer and Plextor's PowerRec technology. PowerRec dynamically adjusts the laser intensity and burn speed to correct impurities in the recordable media."

18x? I find myself thinking that I don't care, largely because when burning with 12x media on my 16x drives, it's rare for me to see more than 8x. So, in some ways, perhaps I should be excited about this news because 18x might mean real 12x someday.

Then theres the problem with finding hard drives that can sustain that. ^^ My newest 160gig can do 8x+ burns, but my 2 old 60gig's can not. Also finding a media that will allways work at the max rated speed is hard. I usualy just choose 4-8x because its still fast and less likely to fail due to the disc not keeping up with the rated speed.
