Default Picture this: 3D TV by 2020

http://money.cnn.com/2005/08/19/technology/3dtv.reut/index.htm?cnn=yes

"Imagine watching a soccer game on a television that not only shows the players in three dimensions but also lets you experience the smells of the stadium and maybe even pat a goal scorer on the back. Japan plans to make this futuristic television a commercial reality by 2020 as part of a broad national project that will bring together researchers from the government, technology companies and academia. The targeted "virtual reality" television would allow people to view high-definition images in 3D from any angle, in addition to being able to touch and smell the objects being projected upwards from a screen parallel to the floor."

Four words: pie in the sky. I can see some huge barriers to this ever becoming practical, namely size and expense. Researchers have been touting 3D display systems for the past century or more, yet it has never seen widespread acceptance by average consumers. I can't see how this effort will be any different.

Here's how: if they'd just settle for making a great TV set (or a similar device like it that would work as a normal tv) AND make the 3D as an additional feature that can be turned on and off.

By giving the people a free choise of buying the TV they want, they might want to get one, after discovering the 3D possibilities theirselves. Stuff it down peoples throats and get ready for some heavy rejection by the audience.
