Default Yet More HD-DVD Problems

http://www.highdefforum.com/showthread.php?t=50692

You know, I figured I'd already had my fair share of Xbox 360 HD-DVD playback problems with what happened recently, but it seems I'm not that fortunate. Last night my wife and I sat down to watch a couple more episodes of Heroes, this time on disc four. I put it in the drive, it started to play the Universal HD-DVD splash screen, then it bombed out and displayed this instead:

As any geek knows, the "Wife Test" is critical for high-tech electronics in the home. When my wife saw that screen she declared "Ok, the HD-DVD drive sucks!" I hate it when my technology embarrasses me, but I jumped into troubleshooting mode, ejecting the disk and putting it back in again - and this time it worked. If this forum post is to be believed, error 0xC6670001 is an "XPLAYER_E_READ" error. And others are having exactly the same problem with exactly the same Heroes disc. What exactly did Universal DO to this boxed set to make the discs so flaky when played on an Xbox 360? My confidence level with the Xbox 360 and HD-DVD discs is at an all-time low - when you can't rely on your technology to perform, you start not wanting to use it...

Oh how I sympathize. The Wife Test is why we don't use MCE as our DVR anymore and why we just rent one from our cable company now (that and it will do HD).

I got a similar error on Hot Fuzz. Ejected the disk, restarted the 360 and it worked fine. What was really weird was that it played the Universal/Universal HD intro and then errored before going to the menu.

It seems more like it's the Xbox's fault than the discs, right? I'd hope Microsoft releases a firmware update... but now I'm staying away from the Xbox 360+HD DVD combination for the foreseeable future.

Well, actually, no - both problems I've had have been with the Heroes discs, and prior to that I haven't had any trouble with any other HD-DVDs. The first problem I reported was 100% a Universal disc mastering problem (they made a bad decision). This problem MIGHT have been just a one-time fluke read problem with the Xbox drive, but since I found other people complaining specifically about Heroes Disc 4...that leads me to believe it might be a problem with the Heroes discs.

I've never heard it put so eloquently, but I can REALLY RELATE to this statement. Nevermind that the info on or available to my Smartphone/Pocket PC has bailed us out of many a jam - when the wait cursor spins, or a soft reset is needed, all of my technology sucks

Default Heroes DVD and xbox 360

I have been have difficulties with my Heroes DVDs as well. The first disc flat out wouldn't play and many of the other stop and sputter. I'm using an xbox 360 to play them. It also appears that the xbox is scratching game discs (and only game discs) about a 1/4 inch from the outside edge with the xbox laying horizonatally and as stable as it can be will out bolting it down. I'm not sure if it is the DVDs or the xbox. I think I will exchange the DVDs, anyone know about the xbox?
