Default Unpacking the DVX-POD

http://www.digitalmediathoughts.com/albums/dvx-pod/

It's here! My loaner DVX-POD arrived today, and in the best tradition of unpacking ceremonies, I decided to snap some pics of the process and the hardware. Photos were taken with my Canon Digital Rebel.

The unit is charging at the moment, but I did power it on briefly to take a look at that big screen, and they put a fantastic LCD in the unit - it looked superb! More later once I delve into the actual workings of the unit...

I'm still not quite sure that I fully understand this unit - it sort of seems like an oversized Archos AV400? You can't play DVD's on it, unless you go through the hassle of ripping and re-encoding them (observing legalities, of course  ). You can record TV on it, but what if you already have a PVR, like a TiVo? Can you transfer content from your TiVo to this unit? I'm assuming that this is primarily planned to be used with your PC, or connected to your TV - does it have a bult-in program guide access of some sort, or are you limited to pushing the record button and leaving the TV at the desired channel in order to record TV?

Granted, it has a 20GB hard drive and a big, gorgeous screen, but the portability doesn't exactly look that great - this isn't the kind of item that you'll slip into your pocket. In the end, I end up feeling like a laptop would give me similar functionality for not much more money, and something like a Dell Axim X50v with a 4GB microdrive isn't too far from this either...

Looks gorgeous.

I agree with Mcsouth--it's a bit too big.

But it's gorgeous.

Yeah, but... a big unit also means a big screen. That thing really makes my mouth water, I can't wait to see more pics.

I had a look at some PVPs at Mediamarkt (like BestBuy) last week. The smaller units were sweet, but the bigger ones just give you more. Too bad one can't just have two, a bigger one for travelling and a smaller one for every-day use.
