Default recording ring tones?

Has any of you recorded someone's voice and then converted it into a wav so that it can be used as a ring tone for a (symbian) smartphone?
Here in Germany you can download (paid) voices and noises, but how can I make one myself? If I used the voice recorder of my PPC the sound quality would not be too great or would it? And how can I convert the format?

Sure, I've done that before using a Pocket PC - the audio quality isn't FANTASTIC, but it's not all that bad. You can always take that WAV file into an audio software program and clean it up too...

Thanks for the reply, Jason. Can you recommend any specific audio program - maybe even a free one, as I might only use it once or twice?
