A few weeks back I transferred some MiniDV footage onto a DVD for someone, and they wanted a few more copies - since it was a non-encrypted DVD, it should have been easy, right? I fired up Nero 6 and proceeded to copy the DVD - and had one good burn and five bad burns. My machine is a little unstable software-wise at the moment, but I was surprised to see so many DVD burns fail. Worse, look what stuck around even after exiting from Nero:
Why on earth would it leave behind a 3.7 GB file? And worse yet, why would it put it in the My Documents directory? I'm seeing more and more applications do this, and I hate it - the My Documents folder is for DATA, not plugins (Pinnacle Studio 9 is bad for this), temp files (Nero) or any other junk. I ended up installing Roxio DVDCopy, a product that I more or less slammed in a review, onto my laptop and it worked perfectly - I ripped the DVD to an ISO file then burned it again. Perfect! Installing DVDCopy was fast and simple - I didn't want to put the huge Nero suite on there just yet. In fact, I'm leaning towards switching over to Roxio's burning suite rather than using Nero, even more so after this sloppy temp file issue.
I'm not sure whether my PC DVD burner is dying, or if it's a software issue. I upgraded the firmware but that didn't seem to help. I hope it's software, although if it's dead that would give me an excuse to get a new shiny 16x burner.
I noticed the tiny .PST file. 8K can't be too many messages. Is that a private email acoount or publie one? As never seen it listed on the websites.
One problems in my "My Documents" folder is all the "My XXXX" folders that get created by programs. I must have about 25 "My something" folders. I understand the logic behind creating them, but wish all programs gave you a choice where data goes and if a seperate folder is created.
In all my years of CD/DVD creation, I've flipped through multiple software packages and have found Nero to be the most reliable. Of all the botched-up burns I've done (the last one probably being about four years ago :P), not once has Nero left an image file lying around. I think it all comes down to one little box tick:

It's actually a small setup file for my hosted Exchange account - when I run it, it sets up Outlook with all the correct mail server settings, etc. It's very cool. That email address is my main "corporate" email address for Thoughts Media, the mother company of all the Thoughts sites.
Sure, but that's not my point: why on earth would Nero think that the My Documents folder was a good place for a 4.7 GB file? That's a horrible design decision for them to make. The reason why it particularly pissed me off is that I have software that synchronizes everything in the My Documents folder to both of my laptops - so when that file was created, it was trying to replicate a 4.7 GB file across two other machines! I couldn't figure out why the hard drives on all three computeres were churning away, and why I had no bandwidth, until I realized it was trying to sync that big-ass file. Ridiculous!
My first two attempts used the "on the fly" option, then when the second one failed, I switched over to the regular copy - that's when it generated the 4.7 GB file. I wasn't ripping an ISO file for safe keeping, I was just duplicating a DVD - you'd think the default would be to NOT keep it.

I just thought that maybe you had inadvertently released some sensitive information in a harmless screenshot. I get so used to seeing information blurred out in screenshots and not seeing it made me wonder.

Don't worry. I share your anguish. My Documents should be used for, well..."documents", but some programs think otherwise, and by default, Nero does use the My Documents folder. But I'm not going to share all my beef with Nero just yet. I'm sick of games/media programs that store half of the user files in My Documents as well. If they really needed to, they could put it in the actual game data folder, or Application Data in Documents and Settings isn't a bad move either. As LoneSniper said, I just have too many useless My... folders and what not lurking around in My Documents that I actually had to designate another "My Documents" folder in the original "My Documents" folder to store my documents.

You know, the first time I read your post quickly and thought you were talking about a folder you keep your porn in. "My XXX"
Oh no, I keep all the porn in a hidden folder so the girlfriend does not stumble across it. If she gets any more computer literate I will have to think of another way of hiding stuff.
