A Smartphone is simply a mobile phone with advanced features that allow email, calendar, wireless web browsing, game play, etc... The 3 major players in the smartphone market are Symbian, Microsoft, and Palm.

GSM is just the radio or standard that the carrier has selected for their network to operate on. In Canada, Fido and certian parts of Rogers Wireless are GSM. For a phone to work on those networks the phone must support GSM. For the most part phones only support 1 format. You won't find a phone that supports GSM and CDMA.

Although the two are related in that most Smartphones are GSM based, they aren't really connected. Does that make sense?
