Default Zune Shows No Love for NAS

http://aranworld.com/article/105/zune-doesnt-like-my-nas

"I have done some troubleshooting on my problem importing music into my Zune, and have concluded that the problem is that Zune has a difficult time adding songs from a NAS hard drive. Yesterday, I took a cd, Ennio Moricone’s Once Upon a Time in the West, and used Zune itself to rip this CD to a location on my NAS hard drive. Zune was able to successfully rip the CD and all MP3s were saved. If I double clicked on one of those files from Windows Explorer, Zune played the file just fine. However, I could not ADD any of those files to my Zune library. When I then used Zune to rip the same CD to my laptop’s hard-drive, the songs were added without any problem at all."

For the longest time, I've had this burning desire to purchase a NAS and store all of my media on it, but if the Zune software can't befriend a NAS, then that takes away some of the craving. Admittedly, it hasn't been a good week for Microsoft. Bugs have plagued the Zune software to no end causing frustration levels of consumers to rise. When can we expect an update? This month, next month? Or will we be forced to wait until early 2007?

Hmmm... this is interesting. I've got a large NAS drive where all my media is stored. I'll have to test this out. I rip my CDs from the PC where my Zune software is installed, and then copy the files over to the NAS. I keep a backup copy of the music files on that PC. I initially added the music from the local copy, instead of the NAS. I'm going to try adding some from the NAS this evening to see what happens.

Good question. NAS stands for network-attached storage.

Think of a hard disk on its own that's part of a network. It's not dependent on a server, so you can access it without other computers being on.

That's a positive sign. Perhaps its just that person's NAS + Zune being screwy.

Default NAS problem with Zune

I'm having the same problem. All music is stored on a separate, external hard drive. The ones stored as MP3s are fine to bring over, but some WMAs won't play and Zune is telling me that the music was downloaded from a store that we have no license for, therfore it cannot play them, which is amusing since the music is ripped from a CD that I bought for my daughter last year. Any solutions?

The Zune software is currently plagued with issues. If I was in your shoes, I'd contact support and have them document the bug. Microsoft probably has a long list of bugs that its hoping to patch by the next update.
