So, after a good amount of hunting, I finally managed to acquire the Gentouch Android tablet. There have been some mixed reviews on the web and The Yaz posted a very nice analysis in our forums. So, after a few days of using the device I'm going to give you my thoughts. Overall, I think it is a pretty good device, but I don't think a lot of users are going to be disappointed with it in its current form. Read on to see why.

<MORE />

I'll start with the good. It is a low-priced, functional Android experience and it comes with a case. The bad (but understandable for the price), resistive touch screen which is a tad unresponsive when using your finger for input, works better with the included stylus. If you have a stock unit, be sure to download the update from Augen which includes a screen calibration tool for a big improvement. There also does not appear to be an accelerometer (or the OS is not set to change orientations). Finally, there is no GPS, microphone, or camera. The device is also slow to boot up and slow to reconnect to wireless after coming out of standby. The inexcusably bad (just poor design) – navigation buttons are small and on back of unit (but I admit, I am slowly getting used to it), 2.5 mm headphone jack (they'll send you a free set of headphones but I purchased an adapter so I could use my own), and a lack of hardware buttons for volume control. Finally, the biggest issue is that the Android Market doesn’t work.

The lack of the standard market is a point of some controversy. This was a big selling point and one of the reasons this device garnered so much interest. The first reviews immediately noted that the Market didn't work and Augen posted on their site that this was a glitch and would be fixed shortly. However, more recently they've said that the market was left on the devices as an oversight and should have been removed prior to production. I find this a bit disturbing since if this were the case, why did earlier indicate it was a glitch and why did their advertising and website suggest (and still does suggest) that the device has access to the market apps?

The lack of an app store knocked out my plan of using this as a Kindle, but with the Kindle price drop to $139, I just ordered one anyway. This also prevented me from trying some of the other primary functions I use on my Droid, namely the apps for Facebook, Yahoo Mail, Slacker Radio, and nswPlayer. So my testing consisted primarily of using the web browser and playing some videos using Android’s lackluster built-in video player. It worked fine for these purposes. I really liked the browser; even though this has roughly the same resolution as my Droid, the much larger screen size made it pretty enjoyable to look at the normal versions of websites like Facebook rather than their mobile counterparts.

This really leaves you with a 7" Android powered tablet primarily for surfing the web - and not much more. Not bad, but not what I was offered, so what to do? I debated returning it, but after the hoops the store jumped through to get me one (the manager personally picked one up in another state while traveling because his store had not been alloted any) I feel kind of bad just returning it. Plus, there is already quite the hacker community springing up for this device. It has already been fully rooted and it appears that you can get the market to work on the rooted device. If you are into that sort of thing, check out the XDA Developer Forum for this device.

Had this been available a year ago, prior to the release of the iPad, I don’t think most of us would have complained much had it been priced at $400-$500. But, they released it now, and for the price, this is an OK unit as is. But having used Android on my Droid for nearly nine months now, using this device made me realize that there is a certain synergy between all the hardware components and that the apps really do make the device. If you aren't afraid to get under the hood, it looks like this could potentially be a fun device to tinker with. Otherwise, I’m left seeing so much missed potential, which we will probably be able to get if willing to wait six months and spend an extra $50 to $100. In a nutshell, I think this device is similar to the original Eee in that it is just good enough to give us a glimpse of what is coming.

Chris Gohlke is a Contributing Editor for Thoughts Media. Update: Between the time I wrote this review and when it published, I decided it didn't want to fuss with hacking this device, so I decided to return it and put the money towards one of the better tablets we will hopefully see later in the year. I'm sold on the form factor of a 7 inch tablet, I just think the hardware and software on this one needs some work. Of interest to those of you considering this device, I went to do a factory reset prior to returning it in order to make sure all my personal information was removed and found another bug in the device that prevented a factory reset. A patch was just released this past weekend to fix this issue and also to add on-screen navigation buttons to help cover for the fact that the hardware buttons were located on the back of the unit. Thankfully the patch worked to remove my data, but my few minutes of using the device after the patch also found the device to be significantly slower such that I would now consider it unusable.

I sure hope the manager who got it for you wasn't on duty when you returned it. :D

He wasn't but I actually left him a note with some screen prints saying why I was returning it. The package itself says it access the Android market and the news releases on the Augen site prior to my purchase says that the non-functioning market was a bug that will be fixed. They didn't post that it wouldn't be fixed until the day after I bought it, so I felt on good ethical ground to make the return due to the fact that the manufacturer misrepresented the product. But I wanted to communicate that to the manager, since if he saw it back at the store he would know I returned it and I really didn't want him thinking I did the purchase/return just to borrow it for the purposes of writing a review.

Sorry to hear that you took the GT back :(

I've also looked at the XDA forums for advice, but I had no desire to root my device. As an Android n00b I've looked for the easiest solutions to make the GT useable and I think I'm almost there!

The first thing I used was the Augen updates and drivers. My second discovery was a windows based program to load programs through USB

The Android Central Sideload Wonder Machine

Then I found the "Gentouch78 for Dummies" site

augengentouch78.webs (http://augengentouch78.webs)

Where I loaded the programs I needed to make the GT work much better:

ADW.Launcher (replaces the default screen setup options) along with
application.RotateD (which selects portrait & landscape modes).

To save battery life I've installed toggleair to turn off the fake cell antenna to save battery life and reduce heat, and installed Wifi_OnOff which manages wifi from an icon on the ADW launcher.

The other programs I've installed include Brightness_Profiles (Because the default does not work) roy.volumecontrol (control the volume outside of settings) and nook2.0 (since I really wanted this to be my e-book reader).

Oh and by the way... if you download a program and its a *.zip, you need to rename the file *.apk before it can be installed (It took me a good week before that tidbit was discovered )

Yes, the screen can be difficult sometimes, it does not have the official market, and there is still a problem changing the MAC address and logging into Cisco access points, but overall I'm happy with my GT!

Well I think there is already a new patch that was made to fix some bugs on Augen Gentouch (http://www.augengentouch.com) device. The reason behind that "THEY SAID" was because the android that they were using is a bootleg type of android. That was the formal statement of Google as well.

Nevertheless, I really wish they could fix that because I really love using it compared to Ipad. I even found out that their corporate boss is actually listening. I found out this website like days ago while looking for some new updated patch, if there was any. Good thing that at least they are listening to what we want and something opportunities that this device need. lewserkim, welcome to the forum!

I've grown more soured on them as time has passed. I'd expect that they should know enough about Android if they are developing for it to not "accidentally" leave a bootleg version of it on the shipping device and include bootleg features in their marketing materials. They either were totally incompetent or hoped they wouldn't get caught.

I'm also less than optimistic with regards to their intent for the Gentouch 78 - his original post asking for feedback was in this thread - http://www.augengentouch.com/new-gentouch-espresso-line-with-capacitive-multi-touch-screen-coming-soon/ over two weeks ago and he didn't provide a way to provide comments other than leaving them in the thread and has yet to respond to any of them.

I think, like a lot of the other posters in that thread, that they've burned some bridges with what would have been potential future customers.
