When it Comes to Storage, SSD or HDD?

I have a scenairo for SSD that's I'm looking to implement.

Our laundry room is on the second floor about 15 ft from my home PC. During spin-cycles the whole area shakes. I think this ate one of my HDDs and I lost a term paper. When the price is right I'll move to SSD in hopes that this will both improve speed and avoid being wiggled to death.

But I'll wait until when I get 700GB for say $250.

While I won't be changing from HDD's as my storage and backup drives, I have replaced my main OS drives in my desktop and laptops to SSD. This gives me the best of both worlds, until a time when I can get that $100/500GB drive.

Vibrations definitely can affect hard drives. I would expect something like a head crash based on what you describe. Some cases do offer shock absorption though, which might help any other hard drive you have last longer though that shaking must not be good for the other components either. Have you considered something like going with a smaller SSD and putting a NAS elsewhere in your home?
