On top of that, Macheist is doing a promo so if you spread the word about Calcbot on Facebook, they will give you a free copy of Socialite for Mac. Socialite is a program to manage all of your social networking. A $29.00 USD program that you can get free for posting on Facebook? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me, if it's something you can use of course.

I'll pass on both. They're really good at promoting so-so software like it's the greatest software ever. (though they do make good looking software). But still....it's a calculator!

I gave it a look to see how it all worked and if you just go to the promo page, you can get the program for free without actually buying the calculator app. I haven't really played around with Socialite yet to see if it's something I am going to keep on my laptop... I'm with you on the calculator though, I don't need another one :)

Thanks for the tip- I got my free copy of Socialite. Not sure if I will keep it, but I'm going to test drive it for at least a week and see. Facebook, Twitter, and Google Reader all in once place could be a compelling experience. As a relative newcomer to the Mac platform, I'm always on the lookout for new software to try out. But so far, for Reader I haven't found anything I prefer over Google's own Reader website.

As far as the Calculator goes, I went ahead and spent $1 on it. I have WeightBot and ConvertBot Mini and enjoy their UI's, so I bought the Calculator "on faith". $1 isn't too much to pay if you actually use a calculator on your iPhone and appreciate the experience and find the built-in calculator lacking (I do). There are of course plenty of free alternatives in the App Store, but many are less polished.

Ok, just spent a couple minutes actually playing around with CalcBot. Much, much better experience than the built-in Calculator. The display shows all operations for your calculation (e.g. 3+3*5+2*8%) and you can use backspace. Pull down to show a history tape and swipe left-right to switch between normal and scientific keypads all in portrait mode. And it's a universal binary I can use on my iPad (haven't tried that yet) which of course lacks a built-in Calculator.

Verdict: well worth $1.
