This seems to make sense today as an iPhone 4 user. Damp, sweaty hands can interfere with the iPhone 4's ability to get/keep a signal, according to an anonymous biochemist in the UK. Testing under lab conditions wouldn't discover this effect, since engineers test in a controlled environment, and not outside under hot, humid conditions. So it seems that the iPhone 4 "Bumper" ( link ) or any cover that keeps hands (dirty or clean) from directly touching the metal outside frame may help prevent signal degradation.

Isn't it obvious? Only cool people should be buying iPhones, and cool people don't sweat. Ever. :D
