And making the proposition even more appealing, there are software frontends like Boxee and the new Hulu Desktop that let you harness all that hardware power in an easy-to-use, remote-friendly interface that combines the massive library of streaming video on the web with the DRM-free content you rip from discs or purchase legally on the web. We&rsquo;ll introduce you to a couple of the options, then help you configure our favorite. By combining a few hundred bucks&rsquo; worth of hardware with a free software app and your broadband connection, you can reduce the money you spend on entertainment from $100 a month to $100 a year."</em></p><p><em><img src="http://images.thoughtsmedia.com/resizer/thumbs/size/600/dht/auto/1244664859.usr10.jpg" style="border: 0;" /></em></p><p>Agreed, depending on your watching habits, paying for cable these days can be quite a rip. &nbsp; If you can get the networks over the air in high-def for free or via Hulu and are willing to pay a couple of bucks for some on-line rentals you can get a lot of entertainment for a little money. &nbsp; If you are also willing to kick in for Netflix, between their Watch Instantly feature and DVD plans, you should have most shows and movies covered for significantly less than cable.</p>

I'm running an HTPC with SageTV and I really like it. Currenlty its only picking up my analog cable channels.
I did recently pickup a Hauppauge 1212 HD-PVR to integrate in, but haven't gotten around to it.

I've heard nightmare stories about OTA HD in terms of reliability of signal...mostly that it's hard to get unless you're in the perfect location...and with the analog transmission closing, I feel like this might be dark years in the HTPC space - unless there's a way for the cable boxes to play nice with the HTPC. My own cable provider up here doesn't provide cable cards yet, so when they shut down analog cable transmission in Canada, I'll be SOL. :(

Hmm... I believe Comcast supports CableCard, but SageTV does not.

I'm in the process of switching from DirecTV to Comcast and was thinking about going the Media Center route. Is it just me or are the prices for a Media Center PC with CableCard support shockingly expensive? Like in the $1000 range? Seems like a non-starter, especially when expanded storage HD TiVos can be had for $400...
