To be honest, I don't really notice them at all unless my screen is dark, then they are very visible. But when I'm using the iPhone smudges don't show up at all so it doesn't hinder my use in any way.&nbsp;</p><p>But if they do bother you and you want to make sure you are cleaning it correctly, the Apple site has a <a href="http://www.apple.com/iphone/how-to/#basics.cleaning-iphone" target="_blank">special section</a> on this very topic:&nbsp;<em>"If your iPhone has an oleophobic coating on the screen (iPhone 3G S only), simply wipe your iPhone's screen with a soft, lint-free cloth to remove oil left by your hands and face."</em></p>

This is one of my biggest peeves on ANY device I have ever owned!

As a side note, and on the opposite end of the spectrum from me....my coworker still has a motorola razr and licks his screen directly to clean it. He doesnt lick his finger and wipe off smudges....HE LICKS THE SCREEN!

Get a Scotch Brite (3M) High Performance Cloth. It removes dust and oil easily and leaves no residue. I bought them for another purpose, but I use them to keep my iPhone like new.

I really doubt that it will be able to keep the phone smudge-free, especially with high use. If it did, I'm sure they would have been showing it off to much ooo-aaahh during WWDC. But it will definitely make it easier to clean when oil does get on it; should just wipe straight off with a single pass! I wish my phone had that!
