I hope that Apple keeps an under $1K machine in their notebook lineup. It DOES matter. My first Apple notebook was an iBook and the price was the compelling point for me to buy. Nice specs for a 1st time buyer. This machine is a good warrior - I've had mine for 2 years and it's still as good as the day I bought it. Love it.
