View Full Version : Do You Have A WiFi Network At Home And If So, How Many Devices Are On It?

Ed Hansberry

<p>I was just wondering how many readers of these three sites (Zune Thoughts, Pocket PC Thoughts and Smartphone Thoughts) had wireless networks at home. By just having a device that these sites cater to, it is likely you have a WiFi enabled device. I just got a Zune 8 about 3-4 weeks ago, my first Zune, and love how I am able to sync with my PC's media database over the network, which only increases my frustration with my Windows Mobile device's inability to sync via WiFi.<img src="http://www.ehansberry.com/ppct/rolleyes.gif" border="0" /><br /><br />My list of WiFi enabled devices that I use daily include:</p><ul><li>Work Laptop (Vista Ultimate)</li><li>Wife's Laptop (XP Pro)</li><li>Three Series 2 TiVo's</li><li>Wife's T-Mobile Dash with Windows Mobile 6.0</li><li>My K-Jam with Windows Mobile 6.1</li><li>My HTC Universal with Windows Mobile 6.0</li><li>The family Wii</li></ul><p>So I have 9 devices used online in any given week on my WLAN, plus the family desktop PC that is connected to the router via Ethernet. Note that I have a few other devices like an older iPAQ 3900 with the sleeve and WiFi card (2003 all over again!) and my son has a Nintendo DS that we just haven't bothered to put on the network. I even have a 1999 Dell Latitude that works on the network, but to say it is slow would be an understatement. I am sure that looks like a lot to some here, but I am sure more than a few of you will be able to make me look like a Luddite by comparison. <img src="http://www.ehansberry.com/ppct/lol.gif" border="0" /><br /></p>

Well, I don't have quite as many as you do. I have work laptop (IBM R51, WinXP), Macbook, and 12" Powerbook G4. Also my T-Mobile Wing and my Blackberry Curve. Oh and a wireless printer (HP5850). So that's 6 devices altogether.

I have a Vista Ultimate with a router. Connecting to my wifi (I hope) is my Zune 80G, my HTC Touch Pro (Sprint not ATT), my Playstation 3 (which I only use for blu-ray anyway).

I just got my HTC today so I hope it syncs well...it lists WiFi as a feature.

Hmm...I frequently use my Fujitsu P7010D over WiFi, and an older Dell laptop supplied by school. I've used both my Nintendo DS and my Zune 30 over wireless but the situation doesn't come up much.

My main use is watching shows on Hulu from the comfort of my bed. I love technology.

Router:

Linksys WRT600N
IPAQ 211
Toshiba Notebook, G-wifi / Hardware Gigabit Ethernet
Velocity Micro, Quad Core, N-Wifi or Gigabit Ethernet
Sony Vaio, Duel Core, G-wifi or Gigabit Ethernet

I have wifi which I use for my IPAQ mainly, I recently
moved everything over to the Lan, much faster less
wifi traffic.

Typical wireless devices:

Notebook PC (running Vista Business)
Fiance's notebook PC (running WinXP Pro)\
Kitchen notebook PC (primarily for shopping lists & looking up food stuff)
T-Mobile Wing
My Zune
Fiance's Zune
Using WRT300N. Haven't made the switch to Gigabit yet. With all the other computers in the house (7 more) I have to do a bit of upgrading and not sure if it's worth it yet. I have 14 computers/devices on the network including a couple of of servers (Windows Home Server and Windows 2008 Server), Vista Business workstation, Vista media center PC, Linux workstation, WinXP workstation & network printers)

I just moved, and due to where the cable drops (i.e. not the office - WHY?), I have added to the WiFi'age.

Main Machine (Vista)
Secondary Machine (Vista)
Laptop (Vista)
XDA Trion (WM6)
Axim X50 (WM5, occasionally)

Now off the network is the HTPC, which is, of course, near a cable drop.

Will end up adding an Eee for the wife at some point, probably.

My desktop PC (XP Pro)
Wife’s desktop PC (XP Pro)
Kids’ desktop PC (XP Pro)
My laptop PC (Fedora Linux 9)
Wife’s laptop PC (XP Pro)
Wife’s MAC Mini (OS X)
Family Nintendo Wii
2 Nintendo DS Lites
1 Nintendo DS
My work tablet PC (XP Tablet Ed.)
Wife’s work iBook (OS X)

Technically, my and my wife's desktop PCs (1 and 2) above are wired, not wireless. I used to connect my Sony Clie PDA through Wi-fi and surf the web, but since I got my HTC Star Trek I don't use it.

Do I win a prize? A new Palm Treo Pro? Yes! I'll take it!

1- TC1100 Wife's
1- M205 Son's
3- XBox 360's wife, son and mine
1- PS3 Mine

1- Zune 80

Plus we have about 8 more devices hard wired on the network. Things like DirectTV receivers (4), SlingBox, network printer, Desktop Mac, Desktop PC (Vista) and I'm sure I have forgotten something.

Additionally to limit the load on the WIFI network I have 2 access points so half are on one and the other half on the other. There are other reasons for this setup as well before someone tells me I could run them all on the one WIFI access point.

When I moved in I forgot about cables and just used Wifi from then on. I have;
- my desktop
- my netbook (eee901, gotto love it)
- girlfriend's notebook
- HTC Diamond (which is the netbooks modem out of the house)

The router is also set up for the notebooks of my friends and netbook of my mother for when they visit.

Let's see if I can remember all of it... this first section is just the stuff on WiFi. I have three wireless networks: 802.11n at 5GHz, 802.11n at 2.4GHz, and 802.11g with two access points.

Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop
Toshiba M700 convertible Tablet PC
Sony Vaio laptop
Dell Inspiron Mini 9
Averatec 4265 laptop
Dell Inspiron 9100 laptop
Toshiba Satellite laptop
Averatec 3715 laptop
2 x Windows desktop PC
Zune 80GB
E-TEN glofiish X500+ WM Pro phone
2 x T-Mobile Dash WM Std phone
Apple 16GB iPod Touch
Apple 8GB iPhone
Apple Mac Mini
Eye-Fi Home card
Linksys music player
2 x Sony PS3
Nintendo Wii
HP iPAQ hx4700 WM PDA

The wired network has more stuff on it, about a third of it on Gigabit Ethernet:

4 x desktop Windows PCs
(if virtual machines count, add 4 more)
2 x Windows servers
4 x Xbox 360s
Denon AVR-3808ci receiver
3 x Dish Network 622/722 Satellite receivers
OKI Color laser printer
USB/Parallel Print server
Epson thermal receipt printer
Linksys Cordless/Skype phone
T-Mobile @Home base station/AP
5 x various routers
6 x 8-port Switches
24-port Netgear Level 2 Managed switch
Alesis 24-channel audio recorder
2 x Toshiba HD-DVD players
2 x Turtle Beach AudioTron

That's all that comes immediately to mind. I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

Well I live in the Middle East and construction over here tends to all be done with steel reinforced concrete which makes the transmission of WiFi signals difficult at best. That being said we used to live in a place which was great - big open rooms, all one floor, and my wireless network seemed to work fairly well. However, we recently moved to a new location (bigger place, space for the dogs to run, etc. etc) and I can't get the signal more than a few feet outside of any room that is broadcasting. At first I tried to set up multiple extenders but that was troublesome and clunky and in the end it was easier to simply run fiber all over the place. So now I'm hard wired but before I had basically the same setup:

1 Windows Home Server (which has always been hardwired)
3 Desktops (Vista Ultimate on mine and my wife's, XP on our daughters)
2 Notebooks (Vista HP and Vista Ult)
3 Vista Ult mini-PCs for various TVs around the house (on VMC mode 24/7)
1 Vista Ult Tablet
2 Xbox 360s
1 HTC Shift (WinMo/Vista Business)
1 HTC Touch Diamond
1 HTC Touch Pro
2 HTC TyTN IIs and 1 iMate Jamin (all three used only as media remote controls)
3 Skype Phones (which I guess have always been hardwired to the router)
4 digital picture frames with embedded WiFi
2 wireless webcams (which barely ever work)
1 HP Laserjet
1 HP Photo All-in-One Printer
4 Linksys WRT350Ns around the house for wireless access but the range is barely outside the room that they're in and honestly outside the kitchen we very rarely ever connect wirelessly.

Well, my WiFi Router (Linksys WRT54GC) died on Sunday so I'm almost without wireless LAN. For the time beeing I'm using SMC Wirelles Network Storage (SMCWAPS-G) as an temporary access point.
But at the end it's not a big deal, as I'm not a big WiFi user.
Partly because my house with it's thick stone walls pretty much limits the wireless signal to only one room and partly because I have most of my devices on wired LAN.
Pretty much the only device that regularly uses WiFi is my Advantage - it's nicer to browse on WiFi than it's on 3G and when I finish setting up my new EEE Surf for the kitchen it will also be on WiFi as I don't have wires on kitchen counter.
Everything else I have, works on 1Gb wired LAN:
- Home server (old Asus Pundit),
- old notebook turned into printer server,
- work Notebook,
- 3 Logitech Squeezbox players
- Pop Corn video streamer

It's just better (faster) this way.

Oh and my phone - I never use it on WiFi - it's always connected to 3G network so why bother and since it's Diamond the battery would be dead in 30 minutes :-)

My goodness: some of you could open your own Electronic Stores!

At this time we have (wifi connected):
2 main systems (1 XP Pro, 1 Dual-boot XP MCE / Vista)
1 main laptop (Dual-boot Win 98SE / Win 2000)
1 secondary system (basement; Win 2000)
2 Axim X30 Mid
2 "floating" USB WiFi Adapters (used for various Projects / Guest systems)

All printers are Wired To Something - but in 3 cases they are wired to systems that connect to network via WiFi, so don't know if those printers should "count" or not...

Also keep one "Guest" (formerly Kids) system directly wired to router, as well as a networked printer....
(Using a 2Wire "Residential Gateway," as provided with AT&T U-Verse service. Formerly used a D-Link MIMO router that REPLACED a D-Link 802.11G PLUS a "repeater" located in basement: the 2Wire has - at least - an equally Strong signal as the D-Link MIMO - was rather impressed at that!)

OH: Can now make one addition to WiFi devices: new AT&T Fuze...:)

I've got two access points (set to opposite ends of the frequency spectrum) each tasked to different things.

One is set to B/G compatibility mode and operates for guests and my own low bandwidth devices.
Thinkpad T20 - Configured with MPD as a wireless music station
O2 XDA IIs - Handheld remote control
iMate JasJar - Handheld remote control
HTC TyTn II - My phone, but not really done anymore now that I've got a bucket of 3G data.

The other is set to G mode for my personal surfing
Fujitsu P5020 - Bedside light surfing
Fujitsu P1610 - Around the house surfing
Toshiba Portege M200 - Main mobile workhorse

The reason for the split is so that for my own surfing, I get the full advantages of a G only network that isn't hampered by anything else broadcasting. The B/G network is for friends who are over, and older devices that can't go G, and are relatively low bandwidth.

- and depending on who else comes over, we end up with up to 5 or 6 more devices (iphones, macbook pros, mac pros, mac minis - in case you hadn't noticed, our friends are mac junkies)

Wish my bjII had wifi - I will not buy another smartphone without it.

Dell E1705 Inspiron laptop *
Nokia N800 *
Sony PSP
2 - nintendo DS

I guess I qualify as a very mixed network. The infrastructure:

First floor:
* Main router, WRT54G, with wifi disabled (it's in the wiring closet, no room for antennas)
* Belkin access point, B/G on channel 5, acting as a switch as well
Second floor:
* WRT54G, B/G on channel 8, acting as a switch as well
Third floor:
* WRT54G, B/G on channel 11, acting as a switch as well

The devices:
* 4 personal laptops (me, my wife, two kids) (wired/wireless as needed)
* My daughter's work laptop (wireless)
* Home server (wired)
* 3 iPhones
* 2 iPod Touches
* Wii (wireless)
* XBox 360 (wired)
* PS2 (wired)
* HP PSC2510 printer (wired)
* HP C7180 printer (wired)

I never really listed this all out before. Wow! I do use Network Magic to keep an eye on all of it, especially to see if devices fall offline every now and then.

So reading through these posts i thought my setups were large but some of you have quite a bit. My setup is as follows. For both Wireless and Wired. In my neighborhood there are 22 networks available so Wireless sometimes becomes unstable (nice thing is most dont know to change the channel to something other than the default, but thats a different story), hence most is wired.

Wireless: (802.11G Linksys 54G, no need for anything else)
Dell Inspiron 9400
Dell Inspiron 5150
Nokia 770 Internet Tablet
Att Tilt 6.1 (Cooked ROM)
Wii
80 GB Zune
(and at any given moment an additional 1-5 friends or family laptops/phones)

Wired: (Linksys Gigabit Ethernet)
Bedroom PC (Built from scratch, gigabit)
Media Room PC (Built from scratch, gigabit)
Office PC for printers and such
PS3
PS2
Xbox
Xbox360
2TB media server (gigabit)
1 Buffalo Gigbit Linkstation
1 Linksys NAS drive (10/100)
2 IP based Security Cameras

Basically at any given time any where from 16 to 25 device IPs being used. Glad to see i'm not the only techie out there overloading the power grids. :-)

Router: 1 TB Time Capsule

On a daily basis we have:
2 original iPhones (1 deactivated as sort of an iPod Touch+)
1 iPhone 3G
MacBook Pro
Airport Extreme base station (acting as a wireless bridge to the Time Capsule- tried using Airport Express for this but it couldn't handle the load)
occasionally my wife's work Dell laptop (which stays at work most days)

We also have 2 other XP laptops that see daily use, but run over the wired Gigabit ethernet connection even though they are WiFi capable.

I also have any number of old WiFi-enabled WinMo handhelds lying around but they don't see daily use.

Well, at my parents I installed a WiFi and a LAN (later first, of course). On The LAN, there are three Desktop PCs running XP and three WiFi devices. One is the Router and DSL-Modem, whereas a Laptop and an Apple iMax 20" and an Air Port are connected via WiFi signal. Occasionally, me and my fiancee use our Laptops on this signal, too, and my HTC Universal (WM5) and the HTC Touch Diamond (WM6.1).
Another WiFi device is a Fonara, a tiny WiFi Accesspoint which I got froma giveaway, installed a propper linux on it and now it provides a WEP-encrypted signal for a Top Field TF6000PVR desktop hdd satelite receiver streinghened with a freeradius, so the useless WEP-encryption is not breaking a whole into my security.
The other Fonera my brother received is still performing its normal duty, thus providing a free unencrypted hotspot for everyone, but it's seldomly used as it is in an arrea where not many people would rest and use WiFi (no cafe or bar covered by the signal).

at my home I got a cheap snk WiFi DSL router modem which provides a signal for two Dell Laptops and my HTC Universal as well as the HTC Touch Diamond.

Well, I thought I had a lot for just one person, but I'm mild compared to some of the posts!

I've got everything wireless- my router comes in at a central position and the computers float- mostly!

- HTC Advantage x7500 - WM6 (5")
- Dell Mini 9 (webcam,1G Ram,16G hd -etc.) XP home
- HP color Laser printer-

I've got one of those beautiful Apple studio displays 15"-( boxed away- that if I can ever find anything to run it- I'll add that!

Konica laser printer
HP all in one printer

The thing I'd most like to get on my network is a doorbell!! I have my office in a log cabin at the bottom of the garden. No wireless doorbell I've found yet has the range to make a repeater ring down there, and it'd be a lot of work to run additional cables. I'd like to have a dialogue pop up on my screen when someone comes to the door!

Anyone got any ideas?? !!

I live on a farm, and I've got a doorbell that rings in the house as soon as anyone trips the eye on the driveway coming in (quite annoying when deer do it actually). (Very long driveway) It works through the power grid- so both ends have to be plugged into your power grid. I would imagine that more sophisticated security systems would have something that would connect to a PC. This was a low-cost security answer for me.

Connected to my WiFi are
Dell laptop
2 Series 2 Tivos
1 HD Tivo
Windows mobile 6 phone. Samsung i760.

WiFi is great but like Windows XP seems to be high maintenance. Great signal when it's working for days at a time but then goes down and requires sequential reboot of everything to start working again

We have WiFi at home, but rarely use it. There's half a dozen computers hooked up, and a 2 TB NAS. We have 802.11N network. We have a couple laptops with connections set up and we have a couple Nintendo DS systems hooked to it. But truth is, we just don't use it. all the rooms are hard wired and have a gigabit switch. It's just easier to be connected to the switch and have fast transfer. Movies are stored on the NAS so most any room in the house can watch movies. We really only set up the wifi so that when the kids have friends over they can study online.

Most of my devices are what I call pseudo-WiFi. They're hardwired into a WiFi bridge, so I guess I can count them.

Linksys WRT54G router
Three WiFi bridges (home office, family room, daughter's room)
Toshiba home laptop (I could just connect it to my router in the same room, but that's one more thing to unplug)
iPAQ hx2795 Pocket PC (plus dead iPAQ 5550 and iPAQ 3870 with WiFi card in sleeve)
Two Replay TV boxes via bridges (plus another hardwired and two dead ones)
HP office desktop via switch/hub connected to bridge
Cisco VOIP phone via switch/hub connected to bridge
Brother multi-function printer/fax/scanner via switch/hub connected to bridge
Sony PS3
Sony PSP (first day purchase)
Nintendo Wii

There are also a couple of dead or almost-dead laptops.

I set up my first WiFi network back in summer 2001 because I bought my daughter a Sony VAIO laptop for her 10th birthday and I wanted her to be able to use the Internet without running cable. We still had dial-up back then, so I had an SMC router with a modem inside. :eek:

Yes, using the power circuit would be possible. Do you have a model/make?

Cheers,

I have a linksys router setup at the house and before reading this thread I was thinking that maybe I was a bit overboard, but not anymore. :D

We have the following:

1 - Linux Server via ethernet
2 - Linux destops via ethernet
1 - MythTV Frontend via ethernet
4 - Linux laptops via wifi
1 - Windows Vista laptop via wifi
2 - Zunes via wifi when I have Windows up and running in a virtual machine
2 - Nintendo DSs
1 - Playstation Portable
1 - XBox 360
2-3 other laptops of friends and kids friends for when they come over to visit.

Currently working on setting up 4 more MythTV front ends in various parts of the house, but those will all be via ethernet. :)

So yea I was thinking I was a bit overboard, but not after reading some of these posts...We have a lot of traffic but isn't that part of the fun?

One thing is for sure - in 15-20 years, some scientist will be able to track us down and see if all of this wifi traffic has long term health effects on the body. http://www.ehansberry.com/ppct/lol.gif

Not a lot for me. My desktop is wired into the router so not counting that:

* Dell Axim X51V
* Laptop
* Zune 30

That's pretty much it on a semi-regular basis. I do have a wifi card for my wife's PDA but it doesn't get used that much. I need to replace the charger for it. :)
