Try holding down the power button, contacts button, and messaging button simultaneously, then with the buttons still being held down, use your stylus to push the soft-reset button. After a short while, release them.

I think two of the best utilities out there are Sprite Mobile Backup (http://www.spritesoftware.com/) and Spb Backup (http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/backup/?en). Each have their pros and cons, but both are very capable products. The best way to know which of the two is right for you is to check out their trial versions before purchasing.
