hmm i think for the pharos you need to activate a new phone plan. i am looking for something where i can just insert my current sim card.

There's an awful lot of devices that fit those requirements these days. Have a look through pdadb.net (http://pdadb.net) and do a search for GPS devices, especially devices from Eten, Asus and HTC. Or you can also just go for an unlocked Eten 600, rather than the Pharos version.
