Anyway, the GCF (Global Certification Forum for GSM and UMTS devices) just approved the HTC Kaiser as "HTC TyTN II". Furthermore it approves the same device as Vodafone1615/SFRv1615/Swisscom XPA1615 which confirms that Vodafone UK, SFR France and Swisscom Switzerland will also release the device (beside the previously confirmed T-Mobile Germany launch)."</i><br /><br /><img src=http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/westfall-coolsmart-kaiser-nice1.jpg><br /><br />Ah, the joy of HTC names continues, with the lovely codename of Kaiser giving way to the bizarre TyTN moniker (with some roman numerals for fun). Call it whatever you want, I'm still waiting for this beauty to become available! I'm especially eager to compare it to my Wizard to see how well the third-generation sliders work compared to a first-generation. And it's also lovely that my mother-in-law has a TyTN, so eventually, I'll be able to post pictures of all three devices sitting together harmoniously ;)

i dont care about the name either.. the only downside i can see in this beast is that it is not VGA, other wise its everything i want in a phone..

I'm ready to move up to this TyTN from my Wizard. I'm not due for an upgrade until next year so hopefully, the price will come down (without needing to subscribe to AT&amp;T's data plan). I'm in serious need for more RAM. Hopefully, the phone will work better than on the Wizard. I have too many people asking me, "What?"

whenever a new device comes out... everyone always says "if it only was vga!" which leads me to ask this:

Is it really that big of a difference?

My windows mobile lineage is as follows : magician => wizard => hermes and gonna get a kaiser when released.

I used a JasJar (universal) for a day but it was too big and traded it in for my hermes, and to be honest, i don't mind the lack of vga.

so whats the hype of these vga devices? I'd love an advantage but cingular/attt doesn't support dual sims (i'm not gonna lug that thing around all day!)...

i would like to have VGA for a crisper screen which can be handy in some cases but i can live without it..

I"m with you Saru...I'd love to have VGA, but the TyTN II is loaded with enough features to make it my next phone. Another plus in my mind is that since it's not VGA and having the TyTN already I won't in such a rush to go out and buy it as soon as it's out.

Screw VGA. On the 2.8" screen of the Tytn/Kaiser it's not going to make that much of a difference unless you are looking at a large spreadsheet. VGA IMO was a bit of a half-baked experiment that many manufacturers seem to have abandoned. This is coming from an early VGA adopter (Toshiba E800 and F/S Loox 720).

What I would like to know is what happened to USB host? One would think that the ability to plug in the now-ubiquitous USB flash drives would be a major selling point. They tout these new machines as multimedia powerhouses, yet they are reluctant to beef up the onbard flash RAM to compliment these features -- I think USB host would go a long way to keeping the base cost of the machine down and allowing the user to have more storage on the go if they need it. Plus, USB host can be used for almost anything that uses the USB bus, provided there are drivers. This was never a problem back in the days of the E800 when we were able to hack USB gamepads and Bluetooth onto machines that didn't have those capabilities.

Screw VGA.

It always interests me that people point to VGA as something that the ultimate device would have. VGA is great - on a larger screen. My JasJar has, hands down, the finest screen I've ever seen on a Pocket PC. However, my JasJar, hands down, is the bulkiest phone anyone has used since 1995! So JasJar gets used for games, or composing email when on the road, but not for a daily driver.

I suspect that the addition of VGA in a device like the Kaiser wouldn't be anything anyone is willing to pay an increased price for. However those who find fault with any device will certainly point to VGA and attempt to make it sound as if leaving it out is akin to killing a wonderful device type.

i never said lack of VGA would kill this wonderful device, all i mentioned is that it would be nice to have it, &amp; i'm +ve that more people would tend to buy this device if it did have VGA but for me i'm fine with it as is &amp; when it comes out i'm gonna get one.. ;)

If you have ever seen / held a VGA enabled PDA you would understand why so many wish to have VGA on their PDA phones. I've owned no less than 6 PDA devices in the last 3-4 years and now own the HTC TyTN. Prior, had had a separate phone and PDA device. The last PDA device was a Dell Axim x51v which was a VGA device. The quality of text, the additional text that you can view on the screen, etc., made everything that much nicer and crisper.

I still say the HTC TyTN (and soon Kaiser) at the best PDA / Phone devices I've ever owned. I'm wondering if it will be worth going to the Kaiser (TyTN II) from the TyTN or if I should continue to hold out for this set of features and VGA! :-)
