View Full Version : Anyone else using a totally outdated computer?

I was just kinda curious, am I the only one that is still computing Strongbad style?

My primary computer:
Toshiba Tecra 8000 Laptop
Originally came with Windows 95
Now running Windows XP Home SP1 (Yeah, and I use Luna)
Pentium 2 366mhz
256mb of RAM
10gb Hard Drive
802.11g PCMCIA Card
Battery lasts 30 minutes (Maybe)
Has a little crack in the back plastics
Power cord started working erratically yesterday (Wires must be breaking at the plug)

I use it daily. It is my primary computer. Activesync, web surfing, Starcraft, it still does the job. For a long time, I was surviving with only 128mb of RAM. I could open up Firefox and Trillian 3, but after that, it started thrashing the swap file around. I obtained another 128mb stick and now I can open up Firefox, Trillian 3, Winamp, Word '97, and Outlook Express and it does fine. Trillian Astra Alpha, however, runs very slowly.

So, can anyone beat me? Maybe we should turn this into a contest or something.

Ok, I'll throw my hat in the ring. My wife's laptop that we use at home is an old IBM Thinkpad. PII 366, 192 MB ram, 4 Gig HD, CD-Rom and sound (some of the time). Still running 98SE. Gets the job done...in a slow, painful way. :(

Take care,

You barely win. Barely.

Well, maybe I still have a chance. Is your wife a power user? If she isn't, I'm still ahead. Or behind. You know what i mean.

Wow, this post brought back some memories. My first laptop (I still have it, but I do not use it) was top of the line when I bought it. It had a massive hard drive of 40mb! I remember when I got a PC that had a HD over 1gb. I thought it was ridiculous...how would anyone have enough data to fill up a drive of that size? My current UMPC (Samsung Q1) has 40gigs and it is packed full. I have a 120 gb portable drive to handle all the stuff that will not fit.

It is funny how times change...a card the size of my little fingernail can hold 2gb of data.

On loan to my sister.
Compaq Presario 1230, PII 233Mhz, 96Mb RAM, 20Gig only cause the 2gig ticked worse than a time bomb.

Current work in progress! Acer lightnote.
PI 133Mhz, 16Mb RAM, 1Gig HDD.
I'm partitioning it to use as a damn small linux box.

I still think I've got you all beat, since my laptop is my main computer.

outdated is a general term, some people running nvidia 7800 cards think they are outdated and to other people running windows 98SE machines are still *ok*

my laptop is around a year old but does everything i want it too, 2GB ram, Core Duo 1.6GHz

my desktop is really old, Ath64 S939 3200@FX55 2GB ram, 120GB Seagates in raid 0

Yeah, sounds like she got me. How humiliating.

I was just now trying out Oblivion on my desktop. Radeon 9200se, 1gb of RAM, 1.5ghz AMD Athlon XP. It baaarely runs. Hardly playable. I think I'm just gunna buy me an Xbox 360.

Man, how could I skip a 360? Halo 3, Half-life 2: Episode 2, Oblivion, HD-DVD playback... The three games alone make it worthwhile. When Halo 2 came out, i was the only person without an Xbox. I'm not letting that happen this time.

I'm trying to wait for the 65nm processor change as well.
