The upgrade will also be available for the award-winning <b>HTC P3300</b>, plus some of our operator-branded devices. The upgrades will be rolled out from June, in line with our operator partners’ strategies."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/si_upgrade.jpg" /><br /><br />According to the <a href="http://www.solopalmari.com/images/stories/007/04/WM6_statement_b_.pdf">PDF</a> hosted by <a href="http://www.solopalmari.com">SoloPalmari</a>, the free upgrade will be directed towards devices which have a focus on "messaging". Ironically, the <a href="http://www.europe.htc.com/products/htcp3600.html">HTC P3600</a>, which just received a ROM-enabled <a href="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/index.php?action=expand,54740">GPS upgrade</a>, is not listed. If you can read Italian, here's the <a href="http://www.solopalmari.com/content/view/3124/2/">original SoloPalmari story</a> or the <a href="http://fets5.freetranslation.com/?sequence=core&language=Italian/English&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Esolopalmari%2Ecom%2Fcontent%2Fview%2F3124%2F2%2F&username=freetranslation&password=xO0y3uwr">link to the "translated" version</a>. Also, if your HTC device is not listed, they do say that they will consider providing the Windows Mobile 6 upgrade to other devices if their operating partners see significant demand for it. So, demand away!

Yes, the lack of P3600 upgrade is a BIG letdown, particularly because the MUCH older TyTN, on the other hand, does receive the upgrade. :(

It is very odd, since the P3600 fits the "messaging" filter. Hopefully, there will be enough response from users to get HTC to offer it.

Figures - no official Wizard upgrade, even though it's a device you can still buy through the main sites of the major US carriers. Guess that we're just supposed to cough up the $400 to buy a new device, even though the Wizard is &lt; 2 years old and supports WM6.

Doubt the carriers will pass on the demand requests for a Wizard upgrade to HTC - they'd rather we buy a new device and renew our contract for two years.

Seems that my iPaq got a similar treatment a while ago - supported upgrade path on the hardware itself, but HP decided it wasn't worth the effort to sell an upgrade for it. I remember being pretty ticked then because Compaq had been pretty good about providing at least one OS level upgrade per device.

And people wonder why the XDA forums took off so much? Carriers and manufacturers expect us to keep on paying for new devices with a new OS rather than providing us an upgrade path or even just fixing problems with the current device. Of course people will flock to an unofficial, but talented, resource. :-P

I "upgraded" my 8525 with a ROM from XDA Developers and my 8525 went from being nearly unusable to being my daily device again. I had been using a Treo 750. but Windows Mobile 6 on the 8525 is much more stable, and very well done. I really don't understand why it is going to take until June to get this rolled out, since, in its current state, it is far more stable on the Cingular 8525 than the Windows Mobile 5 version is (and also much faster). Bluetooth was nearly unusable on the 8525 before I flashed it with the new ROM. I, for one, will wait until someone "cooks" a ROM from the official one Cingular releases, since the cooked ROMS are almost always better (in my opinion). :microwave:

Hi. I have cingular 8525 as well, but I don't have patience to wait till June. Could you please share how you upgraded your 8525 to WM6. Thanks

is there an 8125 cooked yet? Cingular not brining WM6 to the 8125 REALLY ticks me off.

There's a whole forum on XDA for WM6 and Wizards. Whether they're legit or not - no idea, but they are there.

There are several ROM's for the Wizard (the 8125 is a Wizard), and you can find them in the Wizard Mobile 6 forum. Please read the forum CAREFULLY before flashing a new ROM, and before asking any questions. I read the posts for over a week before I flashed my 8525 ROM, and I did not have to ask any questions when I was done reading. The users there tend to be obnoxious uber geeks with a penchant for publicly humiliating novices, so READ, READ, READ before asking questions. The answers are all there, believe me. :deal:

Quick note on the process:

1. Unlock CID (SIM is optional) - READ THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY!
2. Read on the differences between G4 and G3 devices - there IS a difference
3. Read the instructions on whatever ROM you're considering
4. Read them again
5. Read through some of the posts to see if there are any major issues
6. Download your original ROM from the manufacturer to have handy if needed.
7. Backup your device (SPB Backup, Sprite, etc)
8. Follow the instructions, including the part where it says to downgrade, upgrade, etc if necessary. The most important instruction is to wait. Be patient. The ROM updates always appear to hang at a certain point but are still working.
9. If necessary, read up on the BootLoader mode. That will usually enable you to reflash your original ROM from the manufacturer.

The most important thing is to actually do some reading. The users on the forum aren't so much uber-geeks with an attitude as they are uber-geeks who get really, really tired of answering questions from people who haven't even tried to look at the sticky posts or even the first post in the thread.

Sorry Pete, this is bullcrap. If you don't like the question, don't answer it. If you tire of the questions, an answer more to the tune of "Search The Forum" is less juvenile than some of the responses I have seen on that forum. Some contributors seem to sit poised and ready to pounce on the first duplicate question, and the punishment really does not fit the crime more often than not. It sort of reminds me of the old IRC days, when the zit-faced teen moderator with the most knowledge rained insults and bumped users as some sort of punishment to the world for not being able to get into Mary Jane's Bell Bottoms. That is the way I see it, anyway. I will step down from my soapbox now. :soapbox:

Perhaps, but it never hurts to ask...and ask...and ask. If enough people turn the squeeky wheel, you may just get some WM6 grease. :)

BTW, thanks guys for not linking to unofficial ROMs or their forum homes. While they're easy enough to find if you look for them, they're not appropriate for the Thoughts community. So again, thanks for being sensitive to that and for contributing to the community. :way to go:

well, thanks guys for informing me about the XDA developers site. I tried to read the forum, but unfortunately it left me even more confused by pouring way too many new information. Some how I have to find a way sort them out and read them one buy one. The problem is they don't give step by step instructions(maybe they do and I didn't see it). So far, I only unblocked my phone. I downloaded the black upgrade, despite being not exactly sure on how to upgrade my device to WM6. It seems like there is a great risk involved i.e. making my phone into "brick".

So, will the MDA and the 8125 get a chance for a non-free upgrade come June? I wouldn't mind paying and waiting to avoid the time costs in figuring out the XDA "upgrade."

Nope, the Wizard (incl. the 8125 / MDA) will not get an update, it seems. At least it's not explicitly mentioned.

Checked the Wiki? AFAIK it has a nice Wizard tutorial &amp; link collection.

XDA-Dev is pretty unique in that it is FULL of newbies as it's a very popular board with tons of new posts and new forum members every day. I think it's pretty understandable if a frequent poster gets angry with duplicate questions. I need to admit I sometimes also get upset when a newbie there asks a question I've already explained in my, in the General forum there, cross-posted articles.

Not to mention the number of noobs who don't read the directions THOROUGHLY and then BRICK their phones and whine!

Personally, I have NEVER bricked any WM phones, starting with the original Wallaby back in 2002. Those that brick their phones don't read the instructions, then cry to the carrier hoping for an exchange. This is most likely the reason why M$ had to attempt to shut down XDA-Dev, it was too good for its own good.

Don't get me wrong, I love that site and this one. If it weren't for unsanctioned hacks, I don't believe WM phones would be anywhere as popular as they are today. For example, I joked with a BB fanboy when RIM pooped the big one the other day and said "Hmmm, my Exchange Server still pushing my emails. What's your BB doing now?" He is seriously considering dropping BB and join the dark side.... :D

For the 8525 the most stable ROM I have used is the LVSW ROM. Black gave me problems.

This is most likely the reason why M$ had to attempt to shut down XDA-Dev, it was too good for its own good.

Nope, MS only shut down the ROM archive and made XDA-Dev remove local copies of files containing any MS-copyrighted stuff (DLL's etc).

MS does know XDA-Dev is

1. a great resource for all WinMob users and new hacks (for example, it was there (and on another "hacking" site, buzzdev) that a lot of genuine tools have been released; for example, Fdcsoft's excellent Task Manager and PIM Backup, just to name a few.

2. XDA-Dev really helps in popularizing the platform. See for example the example of the GPS-enabled trrinity ROM's. Without the CID unlock developed by the excellent XDA-Dev hackers, we wouldn't have been able to use the device's GPS capabilities before March (that is, the official GPS HTC ROM). With support for GPS, the Trinity becomes a pretty good alternative to the Nokia N95 - and I'm pretty sure Microsoft knows the consequences of this ;). And the list goes on.

That is, I don't think MS would shut down XDA-Dev entirely any time. It's would be VERY contraproductive for the company and the entire platform.

There are several "cooked" ROMs for the 8125. Some are stable and some are not. There are several boards where the ROMs are discussed. If you look around you'll be able to find them.

A word of advice ... if you're a newbie and have never flashed a ROM or used a "cooked" ROM before ... BEWARE! You'll first need to figure out how to unlock your phone ... both SIM and CID ... and THEN how to use the program to flash your ROM.

Done incorrectly ... you WILL turn your phone into a paper weight.

Good luck ... and good hunting.

This site has a step by step guide to update the HTC P3300 with the official WM6 ROM.

It also has some tweaks suck as disabling the application lock and enabling the VoIP features.
