Doh! It's not compatible with T-Mo's 3G service!

BTW, why don't manufacturers make quadband HPSDA devices? I would think that by adding a frequency, they can sell so many more? Power issue? Complexity?

YES!! I've been wanting something just like this. I "wish" it had more memory and would love it if they'd squeeze in GPS too. However, if this is released with the specs listed at Expansys, when estimated, I think I may have finally found a worthy successor for my beaten up i730. It's not much to look at anymore, but it has served me well. :)

The specs say that the display is 320x240, but it looks higher than that from the picture. Does anyone else think so?

It's only a 2.4" display, so i think everything is going to be pretty small AND sharp. I pretty sure that image is just photoshopped in too. You'll be able to adjust the font size to suit your needs/wants on the device once they start shipping.

Nice specs for the most part. I have to have GPS though. I'd even be willing to change mobile carriers if this had GPS.

wow. I really like this one. i've always liked this form factor. GPS and FM radio would make it killer but still very nice as is.

definitely one to consider.

If anyone's interested, the CTIA 2007 Blog (http://ctia2007.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!2B19213B4A187D9E!154.entry) has more snaps and thoughts.

Unfortunatelly, it would then have to be 5-band HSDPA: 1700 and (T-Mobile's)2100 MHz. The 2100MHz spectrum auctioned off to T-Mo here is a few MHz off the European one.
RATS :(

Well to date there has been no demand, since the Tmo USA 3G network isn't available as of yet. that might be one reason.

Have you ever owned/used a device with builtin GPS reciever? I just sold my hw6945, any device with GPS reciever and data connection (which you typically will be using constantly) will empty your battery in no time, even though extra hassle a standalone GPS reciever might just be better due to to battery drain, if you want something for walking around try Google Maps for mobiles.

Even though I feel spoiled (with a VGA PDA) in this world of QVGA after QVGA device being released and hardly any new VGA devices coming out, I have to say 320x240 on these relatively small screens is ok actually, but I don't think anyone has gone over this resolution on screens like this as of yet, does Windows Mobile even support any higher in this format?

I wish they could squeeze in a keyboard like this on a PDA with 640x480 resolution ;)

I have an HP RX5915 as a standalone GPS, but it would be great if I didn't have to carry that and my i730. My use is of the GPS is almost exclusively in a car. It's always plugged into the car power outlet, so battery drain isn't really an issue for me.

Ok as long as you are aware of the power usage :)

If you only need it in the car why not just have a bluetooth GPS device that is plugged into power installed in your car(s) then? I mean you can use ANY Windows Mobile device (even smarphones) with a variety of maping programs, inlcuding free Google maps with a GPS reciever (internal or external). This would give you the both of two worlds, GPS in the car in your ONLY device, and no need to worry about pluging the phone in when in the car. Though 320x240 is not a very big display for GPS usage...

I tried that for a while, and didn't like having to deal with the time it took to pair the devices and then wait for the device to lock on to the signal, plus, that required 2 power sources -- I have a GPS built into my car at home, so the portable GPS setup is just for when I travel. Much easier to have a dedicated unit that I can just put on the dash and go when I'm at the airport. If it could double as my phone and still be an acceptable PDA, as I'm hoping this device would be, I could eliminate at least one device from my overflowing laptop bag! 8)

I agree with you. After having a couple of VGA PPC's I never thought I could go back to a QVGA device. But, I am quite happy with 320x240 on my Moto Q. I would like to have PPC phone device, but I don't like the look of the treo with 240x240.

My understanding is that, with WM6, many other resolutions are now supported including 320x320 and 480x480. I think I read somewhere that 800x600 is even supported.

I like a bigger screen, but after having a smartphone like the Q, I don't know if I could get used to a PPC phone with a horizontal qwerty slider. It makes one handed use almost impossible. When Palm comes out with a new treo that has either 320x320 or 480x480 then I will buy one.

I agree fully, having been using a Dell x51v then a HP HW6945 (with the GPS builtin as discusssed above) with 240x240 like the Palm devices, then I tried a Tmo DASH and that's why I was looking with interest on this device as it would enable the 'full' WM capabilities versus the smartphone edition. But I just noticed there is no EDGE :( that kills this phone as an option for me! :(

Specs do mention EDGE on PPCThoughts page

"The 503G packs some mostly impressive innards from the 520MHz processor and 256MB ROM to the quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and tri-band UMTS/HSDPA connectivity, integrated 802.11b/g Wi-Fi... and, ahem, Bluetooth 1.2. All that with Windows Mobile 6 Professional to go."

That was the case at the time of publication, but unfortunately, it looks like Expansys has since modified their specs page to exclude EDGE. I've modified the OP.

I preordered weeks ago, when the first announcement was made.
I've gone through xda -> hp6150 -> PDA2k -> qtek 9100 -> TyTN -> BlackJack -> BetaWM6 Dash.

What has been killing me is the limited functionality of WM6 Standard due to the lack of touch screen. There are too many steps to perform the same tasks, or you cannot perform them altogether (ie. select multiple emails to move to a folder by dragging your stylus).

I have used PPCPhones since 2002; as much as promising the 503G is, there are some issues that I foresee because of the Qwertybar design.

The default landscape mode is not the default of PPCPhones; there are many applications that are really not designed or upgraded to support this mode.
Surely you can rotate the screen to run the applications, but then your qwertybar will be in the way. Today screen in landscape and other ppc apps look 'weird' in landscape. Also, there are apps that pop the onscreen keyboard momentarily and used to drive me nuts when I had the Wizard/TyTN on landscape mode.

As a stopgap alternative, I am considering the T-Mobile P4350 'Wing' or whatever they call it in the end as well; solid, tried design in its 3rd incarnation (yes, I know no 3G but then T-Mobile won't have anything till next year and I would have to use a yet non-existing phone to do HSDPA in 1700 and 2100 MHz :? ).

Yes I know the Kaiser is coming but by the time we see it in the flesh and it becomes available for us to get, we are realistically talking September.
I guess only time will tell in the meantime, there are the screenshots for us to gawk at

I got this phone today and I am loving it. The processor is quick, its great to have 3G back and I missed a keyboard.

The screen is small but it is crisp. I missed a phone like this and I am excited.
