I tend to use ListPro (http://software.pocketpcthoughts.com/product.asp?id=455) for stuff like this, even if it's not directly made for music collections. I believe Ilium (the developer) even makes available some templates (http://www.iliumsoft.com/site/lp/lp_lists.php) for collections and stuff. I use it to keep track of my DVDs and audible.com programs, among other things.

Another option for a configurable database is HanDBase. ( http://www.ddhsoftware.com/) They have a gob of user designed database templates on their site, so there may be something already partially built.

If you really want something that's customized and that's fun to create, you might try GrandaSoft's XSForms.

http://www.grandasoft.com/

It's a nice drag-n-drop application tool that lets you create custom databases, even if you can't write code (like me). It's even got a gallery of ready-made databases, like this one for CDs:

You mentioned that you were going to use Excel on your desktop, but there's a program which will give you the sort of thing you're wanting - Music Collector (http://www.collectorz.com/music/), with the bonus that it has a template for ListPro.

I use collectorz for my CD collection. Careful when you export to ListPro. First time I did I exported ALL the fields. The file was something like 50+ MBs! That was for about 200 CDs. I laughed then pared the fields to make it much more reasonable.
