Now that I've recovered from flu and have a LOT to post, some gaming news:

A decent XIIStag (http://www.ntsc-uk.com/review.php?platform=ps2&game=XIIStag) conversion (top-down shooter) XIIZeal out!

It’s pretty good. In my opinion, it’s in no way as good as Skyforce Reloaded, the best top-down shooter for Windows Mobile (and several other mobile platforms); still, XIIZeal is pretty close.

On my Windows Mobile devices I’ve tested the title on (as of current, tested version 0.9), I’ve had severe flashing problems on the WM2003 HP iPAQ h2210, which render the game unplayable. The other problematic device was the, otherwise, highly gaming-friendly Dell Axim x51v (ROM version A12), on which the game was really jerky and pretty close to unplayable. On the 520 MHz VGA WM2003SE Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket Loox 720, which, with most other fast-animation action / shooter games, is clearly worse than the Dell Axim x51v, runs the game just flawlessly. Also, it is pretty OK on the 240 MHz overclocked HTC Wizard and just playable (albeit still not so blocky as the x51v) without overclocking. All in all, you may want to give it a thorough try to see whether you like it or not (and whether it’s compatible with your Pocket PC). If you’ve already got bored with Skyforce Reloaded (which still should be the first top-down shooter you get), you may want to give this title a try.

Soon: a Magic: The Gathering (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_the_Gathering) clone from the Enslave folks!

Pocket MoreGames, the developer of one of the best Windows Mobile games of 2006, Enslave, will really soon release Orions: Legend of Wizards, a Magic: The Gathering (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_the_Gathering) clone with TCP/IP multiplayer capabilities. As soon as the final version is out, I’ll thoroughly compare Orions: Legend of Wizards to the original title and will also elaborate on the multiplayer capabilities. In the meantime, I really recommend Ben Stanley’s really EXCELLENT review (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=27&p=1706&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1). Note that Eric Pankoke will also review the title - keep an eye on his blog (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=29) ;)

Breakout clone BallRush Aqua updated to 1.1, fixing most of the cons I’ve listed with version 1.0

BallRush Aqua, which was released a month ago (review here (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1624&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1)), has just received a major upgrade, introducing the following:

- Stereo sounds
- High resolution graphics
- Localized to English, German, Spanish, French and Russian
- Enhanced ball controllability
- Enhanced autopilot bonus now allows for manual override
- New stylus control mode for immediate response

Note that, for the last two items, you MUST manually toggle the new “Stylus mode” settings from 1 to 2 in Settings. With this, autopilot is no longer a nuisance when you would also like to pick up (or, to evade) power-ups.

The only real problem still present with the title is the high CPU usage – it really takes all CPU resources, which also means it’ll quickly chew through your battery. Otherwise, I had absolutely no problems running it on any of my (QVGA and VGA, including even the non-overclocked HTC Wizard) test Pocket PC’s. Remember, though, to start it in Portrait mode – otherwise, the button and touchscreen controls will be all messed up.

All in all, now I really recommend this title – if for some reason you don’t like Acky or need something different, make sure you check out the new version.

Free, decent Boulder Dash (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boulder_Dash) (Rockford) clone BoulderRush updated to version 0.8.4

Most of us know the extremely addictive game Boulder Dash (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boulder_Dash). There is a free and pretty decent (albeit no-sound (unlike with the original game 23-24 years ago), no-hi-res and using its own artwork and maps, which are different from the original one) clone of it, BoulderRush, which has recently been updated.

The official (Russian-language) homepage of the title is here (http://soft7thheaven.narod.ru/boulderrush/). Note that it takes ages to download the game from there; therefore, I’ve mirrored it on my database back-end here (http://www.winmobiletech.com/sekalaiset/img-27149-BoulderRush_0_8_4.zip). Feel free to use the latter download link if the former is just too slow or the transfer just prematurely stops from there.

Note that the archive (which must be unzipped with, say, Winzip, anywhere on your Windows Mobile device) contains two EXE files; with BoulderRush_W32.exe, you can also run the title on the desktop Windows.

Highly recommended! (Just remember NOT trying to start it in Landscape mode!)

Warring Nations updated to 1.3!

Finally, excellent Warring Nations (see a quick review here (http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=1506&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1)) has received a significant update. Make sure you download the latest version.
