Disable Pesky ActiveSync Plugins

From time to time, ActiveSync plugins just don't play nice. Perhaps it's a conduit to transport data files over, but the data files are no longer on your hard drive and the conduit gives thousands of error messages. Perhaps it's a plugin designed to sync with software you've removed from your PPC, and now it just won't go away. Normally plugins can be disabled by simply unchecking them in the options screen while your device is hooked up. The problem is, you can't easily disable them unless you hook your device up to sync (Otherwise the "Options" screen where you would simply uncheck the plugin is greyed out!). Fortunately, with a bit of registry editing, you can disable the plugin without disturbing your Activesync setup otherwise. Better yet, you can disable it before you ever plug your device in - ensuring that the plugin won't load when you next ActiveSync.<br />Read on for the full step-by-step! <!> <br /><br />To disable a plugin, Run regedit.exe (The usual registry editing warning applies) and navigate to the following key:<br /><br />HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners<br /><br />If you extend the tree out on the left-hand pane, you'll see subkeys that have unique device relationship IDs (For example, mine reads 78101e48). Expand that subkey out to:<br /><br />Services\Synchronization\Objects\<br /><br />Now you should see a list of sync conduits as subkeys. These include "Favorite", "File", "Media", etc.. You should also see a subkey for the conduit you want to disable. Click on its subkey.<br /><br />Now comes the fun part. In the right pane of regedit, find an entry named Disabled. It should be set to 0x000000000 (0). This means that the entry is Enabled! Double click on it and change the entry to read "1". If for some reason the Disabled entry isn't there, simply rightclick and choose New -> DWORD value. Name the value "Disabled", set it to "1" and you're done.<br /><br />Easy as that!

Thinking out loud here, but is there any possibility that the wmp autolaunching of activesync could be disabled here?

I don't have wmp11 and have reinstalled wmp10 to disable this so can't test but would be very interested in knowing if there is an entry here that might control this behaviour.

Good question. I stopped using the WM sync conduit so I don't have a machine to test it on. Perhaps someone out there has something to play on and can help!

The QuickGPS plugin which downloads the A-GPS data file for the iPaq 6910 works rather well. I haven't seen any other ones.

How does the HP6910 work overall?
What carrier are you connected to?
Do you get satisfactory Phone/web service?

Overall it works great. I havn't had a single problem like i regularly have with HTC devices and with an HTC I usually need to resort to XDA devs to find a ROM which isn't buggy. E.g. I just got an XDA Orbit and it refuses to rememeber my HTTP Proxy setting, this is a show stopper for me so I'm planning to try another operator's ROM. iPAQs usually are at a higher standard and the 6910 is no exception. I only have 3 quibbles. It doesn't have the iTask task switcher or an iTask hard button which is on all the non-phone HP pocket pcs. So I have had to install Handy Switcher and hook it up to the audio record button. And the screen resolution is too low, only 240x240. The last thing is it is a bit bulky. But apart from these 3 things its a fine device with GPRS, WiFi, BT and the built in GPS working flawlessly. WiFi has always worked best on iPAQs. The screen cover is handy and the QWERY keyboard works well. Been using it on Vodafone, Fresh (t-mobile) and Tesco (02) with no probs.
