I'm thinking of buying an Axim instead of a laptop since the laptop doesn't really fit into the budget but one of the things I need to be able to do is use it to test people internet service provider at their location.

In other words I'll be at a person's house or business and they may have dialup, cable or DSL and no wireless of any kind.

So I'd need to be able to plug into either a phone line or ethernet jack so I can easily determine that it's working, just not on their computer.

My budget is severely limited so I'm hoping theres a simple cable or something less costly than things like D-Link Pocket Router and WiFlyer.

There's modem and ethernet CompactFlash cards. They're usually pretty cheap on eBay.
