Hello,

Is it possible to send SMS messages through my PPCPE(ETEN M600+) using GPRS connection rather than sending it through the phone(meaning GSM). The reason why I ask is every SMS cost like 0.25 each through GSM and I have 2mb of data to use so can I use that data to send the SMS instead of through the phone.

For instance if I goto to Rogerstext on my desktop i can send SMS messages to anyone with Rogers phone for free, I just wanna do the same on my M600+.

Hope it makes sense.

Thanks!

I know what you mean. What you can do is try sending the SMS via e-mail. Most major carriers nowadays do support this feature and Rogers is no exception. I'm also with Rogers but I haven't tried it yet - it's called E-mail to TEXT (http://www.shoprogers.com/store/wireless/services/email/emailtxt.asp?shopperID=BC9D5XU4HSPF8HMALA3M6E45JKGJE3F4). Basically, it's [email protected] I think. Any messages you send to that e-mail address should be received on the recipient's SMS inbox. You may want to read the fine print though as I think it adds an extra $5 or so...

I don't think the GSM standard enables SMS over GPRS (SMS predates GPRS, if I remember correctly).

However, there are some ingenious workarounds such as this one http://computer.donutsoft.net/sms/pmwiki.php?n=AFT.AFT for GSM networks in Ireland. It's a Java application that initiates a GPRS connection to a 3rd-party server. This server hooks into the GSM providers website (which all provide the ability to send free texts from the web) and sends the SMS via the provider's website.

It works out at less than a cent (Euro cent, that is) vs. 10-12 cent normal charge.

Some people have reportedly got it working on WM5 devices.
