Listing at $599 (A far cry from the $849 the device is going for on eBay) the 6940 (sans camera) and 6945 (all bells/whistles) is set to ship on 9/13 for those who place orders today - so it's not a pre-order according to HP. The 6900 series leaves little to be asked for (although those who loathe square screens or who are addicted to VGA may argue that point), and from the opportunities I've had to play with one, I can say I'm really impressed with the distance HP has gone since the 6315 two years ago. Anyone considering ordering one?

I've been thinking of going the PPC Phone route very seriously lately.

This is the phone that I am toying with. The keyboard, wifi, bluetooth, and gps would make this the ultimate phone.

I just wish cigular or t-mobile would offer this phone with a contract so I could save some money on the phone. I can't see spending $600 on something that would take a little abuse from day to day use.

Had a Hp 6915 for about 15 minutes and sent it back! Just could not get on with the square screen. I also thought it was a bit light and plasticky.

It looks good to me...though I am addicted to my Universal's VGA screen. The square screen doesn't bother me as much as the overall low resolution. I might get one eventually. It is probably a better choice than the Treo's tiny keyboard...

I have had the 6915 in use for 2 months now, and it has been my most stable and reliable PDA ever! Ok, so it has no UMTS, and it's bulkier than the Treo's, but I have grown past my initial dislike of square screens, and nowadays I never leave home without my 6915.

I even ditched my TyTN (too many production flaws), my Universal (too slow & too bulky) and my GO 910 (I now have entire Europe door-to-door navigation on my Mini-SD card)

Even the headset clarity over Bluetooth is amazing, as is the distance of BT transfers.

To top it off, the www.lionbattery.com 1550mAh battery for JAM, 6500 and 6900 series allows it to go the extra mile.

I would be more interested if they offered a UMTS or EVDO connection, but EDGE just seems too slow now. However, my opinion is HP misses the boat with the size of this thing. They really don't need such a wide device with the lower resolution screen and could really have helped themselves by slimming it down and making it more phone like. I don't think they really understand the mobile phone market.

Is the GPS chipset on this device SirFstar III? Thanks!

Looks like this "relatively cheaper" price is becaus the device is locked into Cingular. Any news as to how to unlock it and use it with T-Mobile would be helpful. I may order one if I figure this out.

Actually from everything I've read, it seems to be unlocked. The product details mention Cingular twice, however I think they copied and pasted some things from their 6515 listing:

One-year parts and labor; 90 days technical support for software.
Warranty and support provided by Cingular Customer Service at 1-866-CINGULAR
(1-866-246-4852) or dial 611 from your iPAQ hw6500 Mobile Messenger series

Nothing on the page, however, seems to state that you must use the phone on Cingular. Also, on message boards it seems that some people purporting to be from HP claim that the devices are unlocked. Not the most reliable source, granted, but I haven't seen anywhere that it is locked.

I ordered mine earlier today. I can assure you that 4 reps told me that its definitely unlocked. Also, Dave from Mobilitytoday is saying that a source told him that HP and Cingular had a fallout over the delay of this device. That's why they are selling it unlocked.

I've already ordered one and truly looking forward to it.

The 6910= EU no camera
6915 = EU with camera
6920 = Cingular w/o camera
6925 = Cingular with camera
6940 = unlocked w/o camera
6945 = unlocked with camera

I also think it's true that EVDO or UMTS would be preferred, but none of those devices have GPS that I can recall. So far, this has the best combination of GPS, thumb board, WM5.0, processor speed, etc.

I believe the GPS silicon comes from Global Locate.

I would have purchased two 6945's if this unit had been available six months ago.

HP recognizes they are extremely late in getting this phone to market. ..You need look no further than the remarkably low price of $599 for an unlocked/unsubsidized phone for your proof point. $599 is Cingular's typical starting price for a new high-end PDA Phone, which suggests that there is probably a lot to the rumors behind a serious rift between HP and Cingular as well...

HP's failure to add UMTS/HSDPA support in spite of all the delays suggests that this phone will have a very short lifespan...

All the delays have given Palm a chance to get back into the game with their soon-to-be-released GSM 750.

Sorry, HP, but you blew it!

Nobody is really sure about the whole Cingular / HP issue except Cingular and HP, and they don't appear ready to talk about it! Honestly, delays typically aren't over "fallout" as much as they are over simple human factors. Carriers like Cingular are not used to having users know about a device months or years before it's release date and have a system in place that seeks to serve a quality product over a quickly released product (Through more testing, checking, etc..). While we are informed consumers who track releases and wait with anticipation, I'd be willing to bet that most Cingular subscribers have no idea what phone they want to buy until they walk in the store and pick one. While it's frustrating to be informed (and proof that ignorance is bliss...), we can hope that they are using the extra time to make sure that the bugs are out of the system to give Cingular users the highest level of customer experience.

That being said, we're also a group of people who generally don't give a **** about the little extras that carriers spend the extra time on adding (i.e. special services, downloads, themes, ringtones, etc..), so I am really appreciative that HP has decided to go ahead and just release the thing now so that the "die-hards" can get it, HP doesn't end up with a lame duck releasing it too late, and the blissfully unaware can pick it up at a Cingular store... next March... :devilboy:

To be honest, yes it is a tad bulky, especially compared to Treo's. The size however does make the the 6915 a lot faster and more practical at (speed)typing. Sending off emails is a lot more comfortable than on a Treo.

I finally ordered one. I played around with a unit in the store this morning and the keyboard is definately better than Treo's.

How's the stability though: any hard resets??

6940/6945 have QVGA screens - given delay they were introduced looks like HP is retarded ~6 months to what customer wants: WiFi b/g, UMTS, regular size SD slot, etc.

Just ordered mine! :D

Been waitin quite some time for this bad boy. I'm so glad I didn't fork out $850+ on ebay for this. $599 is a great price for a great toy.

For me it was a tie between the 6945 and the new HTC Artemis (which isn't out yet). I'll try to stay happy with my 6945 :D for a few years. BTW I'm upgrading from the T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition which I've had all these long years :oops: Yeah talk about ancient!

Whoa! You're going to be blown away by how far this device is away from the the original HTC Walleby (The first HTC codename we heard about; the device that the T-Mobile Pocket PC comes from). Heck, even having some way to communicate with the external world other than a cable or SD card will be amazing, I'd think. Kudos for being able to wait so long between upgrades... the T-Mobile Pocket PC frustrated me in November 2003 enough to upgrade, so you've lasted almost 3 years longer!

Hi,

I just ordered one to replace my ETen M600+. I just can't get used to a non-keyboard phone for my daily use. Using the M600+ one-handed for folks with tremors (like me) is really difficult. Also, the ETen location for the Bluetooth on/off is almost impossible to use one-handed even for normal, steady handed folks. I'll probably sell my Treo 650 as well, since Palm is so slow in bringing out the new Treo's in an unbranded GSM configuration.

As I've said before here, my old 6515 served me well on a trip to Thailand, Nepal, and China in May. The Treo would not light up a Thai carrier (operator), while the hw6515 logged-on and functioned perfectly. I travel to S.E.A. often enough that local functionality is an issue. Having WiFi and Skype could be a big plus as well.

The only down side I can see right now is the current limitation on mini-SD card capacity. I'll just have to carry more than one card for movies.....

I'll fill you in on experiences with the 6945 in a couple of days.

Best,

[BILL]

I will probably not get one. I don't need GPS and GPRS/EDGE is either too slow or non-existent [for EDGE] in my country and since EDGE/GPRS/UMTS rates are the same I'd rather get a UMTS device. The Treo750 looks nice as a world phone but then again as another user mentioned palm is taking their sweet time in releasing an unbranded version.

No thanks! After getting screwed over on the HP 6315, I will never own another IPAQ. Love my new HTC MDA from T-Mobile! It never locks up like the HP did.

Hello!

So finally the 6945 is available from HP! But - does anyone here have any info on when a model (presumably the 6925) will be available from Cingular? I know there have been delays - can anyone discuss what the problem is? THANKS!

Just saw an hp iPAQ 6965 here in a shop in Manila, it selling for PhP 41,900 approx. USD 834.25... wasn't tempted at all... too expensive for the specs IMO. :roll:
