Recent McAfee update has caused AS not to work for me/many people (software thread). Had bad luck with Norton, as well.

Any suggestions for Firewall, AV, Spam or other malware protection? I believe its time to move away from the big market driven players.

Thanks, yardcat

Give the CA 12-month free trial (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/downloads/default.mspx) a go. It's worked well for me.

And for spyware protection, Windows Defender (http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx) is worth a look.

Thanks Darius,

I will certainly look at those possibilities. I am steadily getting myself into deeper and deeper do do, (see McAfee thread in software) thanks to this rediculous upgrade of theirs.

Those are the ones I use as well. However, if I let Windows Defender run with the default settings, it creates 4 or five system checkpoints a day. Is it supposed to do that?

Atm, I've set Windows Defender not to run automatically, and I try to remember to manually start/update/run it every few days.

You should try out Panda http://www.pandasoftware.com/ it's really good. They even have an online scanner where it can scan your computer for viruses from their website.
