Indeed, the UX is quite different from the Samsung Q1 UMPC, and bears more similarity (conceptually) to the OQO model 01. Sony perhaps learned from the OQO's shortcomings, thus releasing a more solid, usable machine for $200 less than the model 01's original price."</i><br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/ekkie_mobiletechreview_ux180_review_200607.jpg" /><br /><br />Give Sony credit! While their UX line isn't perfect, they're real close to establishing it as THE gold standard for micro/mobile/handheld PCs (if they haven't already). The reviews and accolades continue with MobileTechReview being the latest to take on Sony's new creation. Check out the article to find out why they awarded the UX180P with their "Editor's Choice" seal-of-approval!

someone should review the next model of the UX-series...

instead of having a 30GB spinning HDD, it has a 16GB flash drive!!

meaning, a reduced weight down to 490 grams (one can really feel the difference between 520 grams in the previous model), longer battery life (around 30 minutes to an hour more), and faster disk reads (there wasnt much changed in the benchmark for writes) by a factor of almost 6!

it also has a more business-like stylish coloring...

unfortunately, it is about US$500 more expensive for a similar configuration!

ah, yes, it comes with a WANSEG TV tuner, too (this works only in Japan AFAIK).

The more I read about this device, the more I like it. For me, the screen would suffice and the thumb keyboard can really work if you want to get some eMails out and don't want to whip out a portable keyboard...

There are so many cool things about it. Tablet Kiosk in my opinion has dropped the ball on the UMPC EO, so I won't be going there. I am looking at the Motion Computing's LS800. At 2.2lbs and 8" screen, it's darn nice compromise and is only $100 more than the Sony. I wish they had some nicer carrying cases!!! VAJA, are you listening?

We live in a great time. Keep the good stuff coming!

This is what I call a decent UMPC (or Micro PC, according to Sony). All the wonderful features just beats Q1 (not considering the price). If UX180p can be sold for under $1000 in the future, I would certainly buy it.

Does this thing (or any of the other UMPC's) come with barcode scanners built in?

Thanks!

Has anyone read the review that did an exact comparison between the OQO and the UX50? That was one amazing review, because the reviewer went to great lengths to give important details. It makes me want to buy it more and more.

a cool site (design-wise with nice dark "sony" colors) about the UX...

I was looking at the LS800 also but I had a chance to visit a Circuit City where they actually used the LS800 in the store for various tasks (not for sale). I asked them how they liked the LS800 and the said one of their biggest gripes was the speed. They said it was really slow. They gave me a short demo and I have to agree with them. Just something to consider.

But before I ever consider buying this, I will wait till the OQO 02 is announced. Hopefully, all other UMPCs/MicroPCs prices will drop. When is the Core Duo 1.1 GHz CPU supposed to be coming out? Putting something like that in a micro PC will definately make is really powerful...
