As a heck of an easy alternative if you do not have a phone edition device...

If you can forward mail on delivery to your inbox..
Forward all your mail to your cell's sms inbox (example [email protected] if you're a Verizon customer)
Your cell will then act as your notifier...
You can then use your PPC to pop your email account, to read the full message, download attachments, and reply.
Simple, easy, 100% effective.
