Fujitsu-Siemens Pocket LOOX N100/N110 Revealed

Fujitsu-Siemens' new LOOX N100 and N110 are worth a look - though without question, the latter is the one that deserves all the attention. It features a Samsung MCP3 300MHz processor, 64MB RAM, 2GB ROM (note, the N100 only has 128MB ROM), a 2.8" QVGA (240 x 320) TFT-LCD, a miniSD slot, integrated GPS (SiRFstar III, with the NAVIGON MobileNavigator|6 software pre-installed on a miniSD card), and as mentioned before, Windows CE 5.0.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/wey-20060603-N100.jpg" /><br /><br />Did I also mention that it's 89mm x 62mm x 16mm and weighs just 100g? 8O

Uggh, I think I see...

They may be using the core Windows CE 5.0, but they've wrapped it with their own GUI.

Can one install "normal" WinMobile software on these things?

hmmmmm... I wonder if they went the CE route because of the navigation system???

Maybe there's some future in this unit 'plugging in' to a vehicle docking station.

In fairness - the BE-300 was intended to a PDA - but the N100 is intended to be a dedicated GPS with media player and games as simple extras.

Possibly it could be used as a PDA - but no conventional buttons, no wireless etc. make it clear that they aren't focussing on the PDA market.

Did I also mention that it's 89mm x 62mm x 16mm and weighs just 100g? 8O

It's funny - but we posted rumoured specs for the N100 back in February and many, myself included, thought they were too unlikely in too many respects:

Yet - the anonymous source got the size right, they got the weight wrong (but though not as light as 70g, 100g is still pretty good), they specified a range of built-in flash amounts - and one of them (2GB) they got right, the changeable covers, media player with AAC support, support for TMC (even though it's an optional module), the type of GPS etc.

Having seen how much can change between early specs and final release of a model - I'd say they pretty much got it right...!

Personally I would rather have a PDA that ran straight Windows CE - and than load the Windows Mobile interface (or unload the CE interface and load WM interface to keep the overhead down) so you can still use the device as a WM device and use the available software. Maybe if such a device existed more software could be written for CE that would be more non-traditionary for a PDA to have and more businesses may see it as a portable computing platform and not limited by being a "smart phone" or PDA.
