According to information posted at On the Go Solutions, the HTC Hermes will be introduced by i-mate as the JASJAM with the following specs: a 300MHz CPU, 64MB RAM, 128MB ROM, a 2.1-megapixel camera, quad-band GSM/GPRS/UMTS/HSDPA support, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, and Windows Mobile 5.0. Obviously, nothing is final at this stage, so we'll keep our eyes open for some concrete evidence in the weeks to come.

Interesting they talk about a 300 mhz processor and HSDPA, while O2 says it will have a 400 mhz processor and no HSDPA, just UMTS.

I would be very curious to see what other OEM's (if any) pick up that O2 version of the Hermes.

And for us on T-Mobile US - EDGE or no EDGE?

I really have issues with the slower CPUs; I have an Atom and WM5 on it crawls compared to my Qtek S100 running WM2003 because of the difference in the memory type and usage. I have to figure that a 300Mhz CPU is going to perform even slower.

I think no EDGE

According to Arne Hess:

Also the 300 MHz Samsung CPU is pretty good in terms of speed

Also, the picture on the "On The Go" website is of the older pre-production version before they added the extra keys above the call and hang-up buttons

Can't speak to the processor speed, though the extra 100MHz will have me hanging on for the O2 version (oh, please, please puh-lease let O2 UK carry them), but I think the key here is 'HSDPA support.' Call me cynical, but that sounds like marketing speak: A bit like the 'Windows Mobile 5 supports push email' messages we were getting when that was first launched. In other words, 'it supports HSDPA, but that won't actually work until the ROM upgrade which we will roll out (if and) when we are good and ready.'

Still, lots of goodness in the package and the promise of more to come sounds pretty good to me.

I'm disappointed that the latest HTC devices come with microSD slots. The highest capacity microSD cards at the moment is only 1GB. Does using microSD as apposed to SD really save that much room? Having a 4GB SD card in the device makes it a lot more useful as well as the possiblity of using SDIO cards. This would be my next device if it had a SD slot. Just bought a 4GB SD card for my Blue Angel and I am reluctant to put it aside.

The highest capacity for microSD is 2GB now and about $60-$70 US. I have an adaptor, so with the exception of my existing SD library, it seems ok. Actually, I don't think but once that I have ever taken out my card from my Wizard.

You sound surprised. You should not be, as due to the MSmobiles leak we all know exactly what products HTC plan to introduce this year.

My real question is: Will there be a HTC Universal II next year? A device with GSM, UMTS, HSDPA, WiMax, DVB-T, USB 2, Bluetooth 2, 3 Mpixel camera, 4 GB Nand and an external screen. Now that will get me excited.

I know mini-sd goes as high as 2GB right now. Micro-sd I'm not sure about (and it would suck if they changed format yet again). I hate having to upgrade my PDA and memory card to another type at the same time.

So it looks like the O2 version of Hermes will have better specs (400Mhz cpu plus buttons for Start and OK)? The O2 version is worth considering but I would not upgrade to the I mate version of Hermes. Also, can anyone tell me how they come up with these horrible names (JAsJar, Jamin, JasJAm)? Anyone has any idea as to which carries (if any) will be offering this in the US?

they do have X-Backup listed as part of the pre-installed applications, i hope that means that i-mate is releasing an x-backup for WM5 and that it'll be offered for free to all WM5 imate phone owners!

Also listed is SDIO/MMC card slot, not MicroSD.. are these faked specs (specially considering the outdated pre-production model pic)?

I think the determining factor will be the i/o transfer speed and the extent to which the 300Mhz affects it. I wouldn't really mind the difference if the OS were WM2003. My issue is really with the sluggishness of WM5.

Actually, I don't think but once that I have ever taken out my card from my Wizard.Isn't miniSD different from microSD? AFAIK miniSD is the one used in the Wizard and microSD [aka transFlash] is the one used in some Samsung and Moto mobiles, it is not the same format and the transFlash cards are smaller.

quit torturing yourself staying with that crapola company. Cingular will have HSDPA out by the end of the year here and Tmobile will be lucky to have it by the end of the decade.

Where I work and live, Cingular service is weak at best, non-existant typically. T-Mobile however, has a tower near me and I have full bars everywhere in my home. Also, the all-you-can-eat $19.99 internet plan is hard to beat. Plus, I have a family plan with 4 phones and have all you can use messaging for 9.99 which comes to 2.50 for unlimited texting per phone. A great tool for my wife and teenage daughters.

The names mean something, i read an interview with the ceo of imate and he explained it. All i remember is any device with "JAS" in it means its 3g. I forgot the rest and also complete forgot where i read that article..
