What is the best software to use to burn my dvd films onto my PDA ... and what file format should they be in. Also will a 1gb memory card be enough to hold a film????

There are several solutions to this - a quick use of the search facility in this forum will turn up a bunch of threads where people a lot more knowledgeable than I am discuss the various options.

However, that said, I use FairUse Wizard Lite (which is freeware) to rip my commercial DVDs and convert them into a form (I believe DivX inside a .avi container) which can be played by TCMP (also freeware) on my PocketPC. How many you can fit onto a 1Gb card depends on how far you squeeze them down. I squeeze to fit a QVGA screen (320 x 240) and can comfortably fit two films on a 1Gb card - I could get three films on if each of them is under 2 hours, or I am happy to squish them a little more.

The FairUse conversion process takes my PC around 3-4 hours and I find the films quite acceptable to watch on the PPC. Occasionally straight lines judder a little in pan shots, but not enough to wreck the experience for me.

You can download FairUse Wizard Lite here (http://www.fairusewizard.com/lang_en/fairuse_wizard_dvd_divx_xvid_backup_tool_light_edition.html)
You can download TCMP here (http://www.corecoded.com/)

I 2nd what Martin above me said. The only difference for me is I have a vga screen and use 640x480. Fairuse is easy to use and the author put a bit of humor into it. TCPMP is a great pda player as well.

I use and recommend CloneDVD mobile. It only takes about 20 minutes to create a mobile movie. The maker offers a 21 day trial, www.slysoft.com.

I would like to be able to watch DVD's on my Dell Axim 51v. I am confused, however, by all the acronyms, the many programs, the conversions, etc. Is there a good source of information that can act as a primer?

Thanks!

I use DVD Catalyst which is very good. You can also use to burn to other devices ie PSP and Ipod http://www.pocketdvd.ca/

I also use the The Core Media Player (free) to view the DVD on the PDA.

Not that I could find. You could plough through the various threads on this subject and gradually build up some expertise but, let's face it, this life's too short. My advice: Pick one of the ripper / encoders recommended above, go grab TC(P)MP since everyone seems to like it as a player, and try it out. If you don't like the first ripper / encoder you try, try another. It won't be very long before you have a combination that works for you and you can get on and enjoy the films (and on a VGA screen, they should be very enjoyable  )

Kinda old, and I find the methods a little convoluted, but it will give a basic rundown of what to do:

I have tried PocketDVD-Wizard and also Pocket DVD-Studio, both great programs but took a long time to convert DVD's, minimum 1.5 hours up to 4 hours and sometimes longer.

I recently purchased Cloedvdmobile for $5.99 off of ebay and it is AWESOME, CloneDvdMobile can convert a DVD in 30-45 minutes, and is very simple to use, converts to an avi. file. You can adjust the size of movies and I have found 256MB is more than adequate for a full movie, so a 1G SD card can hold up to 4 movies

I use the TCMP player to play movies. Hope this is helpful.
