"CeBIT Panasonic will this Summer ship a 4GB SD card which will meet the SD High Capacity (SDHC) specification - also known as the SD 2.0 standard - which paves the way for cards capable of holding up to 32GB of information. You can already get 4GB SD cards based on the 1.1 spec, of course, but for the new version it's a start. SD 2.0 also bring to the memory card standard mandated minimum sustained data transfer rates of 2, 4 and 6MBps - though they may go much higher than that, of course. Devices will be labelled Class 2, 4 or 6, depending on which minimum transfer rate they provide. Alas, Panasonic didn't disclose which Class its 4GB card will be - we understand it's a Class 2 (2MBps) product. SD 2.0 incorporates the FAT32 file-system, so SDHC cards will not be compatible with SD slots that don't support the second-generation specification."

Panasonic has just created a new mammoth-sized (and perhaps mammoth-priced) 4GB SDHC memory card. The new high-capacity, high-speed card is currently being shown off at CeBIT, and should be on sale sometime in Summer. Also of note (but alas, not so exciting) is Pretec's release of the 1.5GB SD/MMC/CF memory cards. According to the company, they've been built to help people who need a card that's a little larger than 1GB, yet a little smaller (and slightly cheaper) than 2GB. Yeah, we're not sure we see the value in it either, but to make matters even more confusing, 0.8GB and 1.2GB versions will ship alongside the 1.5GB.

I'm pretty sure this oddball size SD cards are to accommodate map storage requirements in GPS software. Quite a few combinations of map sets add up to the Pretec sizes. This would allow the suppliers to bundle the software and maps onto an SD card and sell it that way, instead of on a CD.

1.5 GB should benefit Tungsten T3 owners. The version of Palm OS on these devices can only read up to 'less' than 2.0 GB. Weird, but there was a search for 1.5 GB SD cards by some T3 owners not long ago. :|
