What is the best & simplest way to convert videos (.AVI, MPG2, etc.) to videos that would be 320 x 240 to play on my Pocket PC.... (I am not looking to rip DVDs...already have that software :)

You can use PocketDivXEncoder (http://divx.ppccool.com/) - a freeware application. Then, to play them back, you can use TCPMP (http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/) - another freeware application. :)

In addition to what Darius said, you can give a try to windows media encoder (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/encoder/default.aspx) by microsoft. Its free for download. You dont need any properitory player for your pocket pc to play the WMV files generated by it.

for the pocket divx encoder, what are the best settings to have? Mine looks really pixelated....

Well, to keep the size to minimum, I keep the video quality to 10th or 11th level and sound quality to 3-4 level. It works great when you have to fit the movie in 128MB sd card. If you got bigger card, you may increase the quality and sound level

If you have MP 10 on both the Desktop and PPC, just use MP10 to load the videos. They are transcoded during transfer. They are downsized to 320x240 which is what you want. Unfortunately that is not what folks with VGA devices want, and there is no way to change it AFAIK.

Which Pocket PC do you have ? Microsoft did release WMP10 upgrade for some Pocket PCs.
Anyway, you wont face any problems watching movies on your PPC whether its WMP9 or WMP10

I will answer on ripping and converting.

As to converting, I recently bought Allok's programs and they have all worked well. I think they have a trial period. I would not buy any of these type programs without being able to test it first.

As to ripping, just a tip for others who may not have such programs yet:

Over the past 5 years I have used various programs to rip DVDs into small AVI sized files to play on my various PDA's. Back then various programs worked, but only sometimes.

They have gotten way better over the years.

I am pleased with Slysoft's Mobile Clone DVD that just came out last month. It is a really simple interface and it's cheap.

Then to play on my Pocket PC, I just got the below player, which I will attach for you here as a download from my server.

For Clone DVD Mobile, you can use it for their trial period and see how it works. Also, you need their "AnyDVD" which unlocks all DVD's and their region and protection code [CSS].

Here is Slysoft's site:

http://www.slysoft.com/en/

Again, you need two of their products, the AnyDVD and the Clone DVD Mobile. Install AnyDVD, then Mobile DVD. After that it is as simple as telling Clone DVD Mobile where the DVD is located [the drive], selecting the format you want [I pick AVI], and it rips a movie in about 30 minutes. I ripped Men In Black to a 450MB sized file, put it on a 512 MB CF chip and played it on my Dell Axim X50V. Too cool.

Here is the link to the AVI Player I use, just save it to your PC, have your PDA in the cradle, and click the file to install:

The best solution I found is Fairuse Wizard (http://www.fairusewizard.com/lang_en/). It's an easy, free, all in one solution. No need to mess w/several different softwares, this one does it all.

Any particular reason you're spamming this forum? That's the third time I've read that message today.

Noted. The old one worked well, but I always like the latest too

By the way, I donated to his site too. All of you out there, don't forget to donate for the free stuff. There's a "Donate" button for a reason.

Thanks

I looked at the site and software he refers to. The website has typographical and English errors on it leading me to believe product and software is new or has errors too? Moreover, the "free all-in-one" solution he mentions is the "lite" version. Not sure what that means in terms of limitations. I did not download the software based on initial observations. Not saying they are not any good, just my thoughts.

I have been with Slysoft for about 5 years and Allok also seems to work well for converting from one format to another. So for now guess I will stick with them.

Note, however, that my Allok has crashed a few times when trying to convert AVI to WMV. Not sure what the issue is. 8O

But considering the low price of these programs, if it keeps happening, I am open to suggestions from others on alternative programs or solutions for converting AVI, WMV, MPEG, etc. :dilemma:

People keep asking for an easy solution so I keep answering with an easy solution. I certainly am not trying to spam at all. I don't work for that company nor do I have any interest whatsoever in it. I have tried many different solutions to convert dvds to view on my ppc and I found that to be the easiest and nicest solution. Please don't take my trying to help others as spam. :D

No problems! For what's it worth I do agree with you about Fairuse - I use it whenever I can.

Use pocketdivxencoder(on your PC) to make divx/xvid files and then transfer them to your PPC via activesync(slow) or card reader(fast)

PDE handles a lot of different formats - including native *.VOB files that you find in DVDs.

I've used Sompy Movie Encoder a few times, it seems to work fairly well. It has a few options, but it's pretty much click & convert. It shrunk a 700mb movie down to 172mb. It's free, as well as their media player which supports several different formats.
